TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation shared various suggestions and experiences regarding shipping personal items to Bangkok as someone plans to retire in Thailand. Recommendations included using courier services like DHL or UPS for quicker delivery, with local post as a slower but often cheaper alternative. Many participants advised against shipping due to high customs fees and encouraged bringing as much as possible in excess luggage on flights. Some mentioned the potential challenges with Thai customs, sharing stories about unexpected duties and taxes on shipments. The general consensus leaned towards selling unnecessary items and purchasing new ones in Thailand as a more cost-effective solution.

Unless it is sentimental value, it can be very expensive to ship in Thailand, and a bit of confusion at customs and Thailand has absolutely everything that she would want to buy

Bring it on the plane with you.

Bring as excess luggage by buying another case.

Best is to buy extra kgs on the flight, generally cheaper then dhl and the alternatives without any Thai import fees.
they all are, hence buying the extra luggage for your flights is generally cheaper.

Check on your airline's pricing for excess baggage. Buying a Business or First Class ticket can be cheaper than shipping.

I shipped 8 boxes of personal effects total 130 kg to Thailand last July mostly photos and nick knacks belongings of my parents which is irreplaceable, got raped by customs , so be prepared to pay when it arrives they don't give a rat's.
if you going to do a few trips travel light and load Ur suit case up you will get 25 kg a suitcase free and they are rarely checked Thailand end , but that's from my own personal experience.
I personally believe its pointless people bringing stuff from their own countries to Thailand ,why ???? Expensive and pointless , you can get everything to live here. Also you never will become a national or resident here so its best to be able to stay as mobile as possible
photos are different , but you don't have 1000,s and memories are in people's heads mostly.

Don’t listen - Oz Post - max 20kgs per box. Post office to your home in Bangkok in around 1 week for around AUD180 per box. In my case no duty or any extra charges levied. Highly recommended

regular post. anything else and customs will be sucking your wallet dry
Thanks to all those with proper advice. Appreciate it. And to those who don't really get the concept of sharing, I'll ignore the comments. Cheers my bros.
I have imported a 20 foot shipping container full of personal effects from Brunei to Thailand with Asian Tigers, 17k baht customs. My complete toolbox from Nigeria, 5000 USD thanks to DHL which my company paid, plus another box of personal effects by DHL which I got caned on so I do have a small amount of knowledge on it which I am happy to share. Like I said, use Asian Tigers.

From Brisbane I use a company that loads a container up. They have a charge then Thailand has more charges than the company i use I used a pallet and straps to strap my 3 suitcases of clothes can have about a ton costs about 370 then when it gets there by sea to Bangkok it costs 700 ++ in fees
yeah. My adult kids have the photos and other stuff. I sold most of my large gun collection (100 plus guns) etc. tools, etc. moved to Bangkok with 2 suitcases full of clothes mostly. All apartments are furnished anyway. Live next to Fashion Island Mall. Easy shopping.

I own real estate
Gave a commercial building to my son now going to put one that is in Daytona Beach Florida in his name and the other two are already in his name. I just want to enjoy my life without any more responsibility of taxes insurance and so on.
I told my son just send me a thousand dollars a month until I die
Yeah, I went around and price. The Harleys here very expensive, not really worth it. I bought a suzuki 110cc little small but for now will do.
If you buy a motorbike here any type, make sure it has the paperwork. Otherwise you will not be able to register it. I make sure you able to ride out of your city.. Thailand has mess up rules. I am looking for a bigger Bike Maybe a scooter 250CC. I have one in my country, but it's not worth bringing here. Automobiles are cheaper than my country a nice pickup fully loaded around 30k in my country 70k ya Thailand is a better living.
That kind of add up. You're not gonna be there. Aint worth it. Just get rid of the stuff you don't need
Picture of this. I have about 10 store unit oversee containers but I need to get empty. When I go back to my country I'm giving everything away selling what I can my son is getting everything? It's only material things.
yes mate, minimising as much as possible but need guitars. Hopefully cut down to one box😅. In Thailand every 2 months now so know my NZ jackets not needed😂
What if you are here every 2 months? Bring suitcases. They're only charged twenty five dollars for each one I believe a lot cheaper than Paying the taxes. But you can do the math what it is if they say 400 bath in America. Money that twelve dollars its three time the amount of 4 = $12 Give and take a little 500baht is $15
Thailand has gone up on prices but still cheaper than my country
yes mate, went Xmas last time and left clothes there but my partner came to me this time so she will take more back. I retire in 7 weeks so only one way ticket soon and possible 2 suitcases. Guitars are the issue so maybe only one big box hopefully. Yep, has got more expensive but was expecting that to make up for covid losses.

I have always said to people what goes on in the summit
What I meant was? The made up thing by the government
To create the mess it has made.
More and more business are closing it doors.
They are letting in more and more illegal immigrant and forcing the people taxes to pay for their livelihood. What's unfair for the American citizen? Or any country citizen of the people.
So funny how they can take all the people money and give it away the way they want to.
I don't even ask for the people permission. No vote. No, nothing. Just do they want to do
We the people are not allowed to votes in to do anything.
We need to get rid of them all

Sometimes when sending stuff from your own country into Thailand the customs can be a real pain in the arse. For example my friend sent some bags of warm clothes from the charity shops to a village he visited in northern Thailand and the customs refused to allow his packages in unless he paid taxes of around 400 GBP way more than the clothes cost to buy. He refused and the package didn’t get returned to the UK or make it to the village 🙄
If there’s things you can bring with extra luggage on the plane then this is a better option.
Hopefully you get some better answers from some more experienced people who have done it but dealing with Thai customs can be a pain in the arse in my experience.
all helpful mate, except a couple🤔. Photos and guitars my main issue but understand your answer completely. I do same to native american kids, customs make it hard to be kind.

Best suggestion... don't bother. To much money and hassle.
They were giving good advice in don’t. Shipping rates are ridiculous. Then you have customs costs and taxes as well. Juts because someone doesn’t tell you what you want to hear doesn’t mean it’s not good advice. SMH 🤦♂️
The helpful suggestion is to bring in only what you can carry in. So you need to choose airline for maximum freebie carry-in and for being able to pre-book extra baggage. The latter will also be the cheapest for that extra baggage. If those conditions mean not choosing the optimal route you live with it.
you can take photos and clothes in extra baggage... You should have made post asking for people's experiences doing shipping and then you'll understand my comment better.
you should look up passive aggressive, narcissism and join that group instead of this oft useful one here. None of your comments help …they all about you 😔
yep photos.. put my guitars at mates place bought new fake Gibson online clothes too 40kg x 2 business class.. clothes very cheap..set-up house stuff not expensive.. friends all enjoyed what I gave away.. lots to throw away..
