TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about bringing a bulky 10-year-old music system to Thailand for renewal of their retirement visa. Responses indicate that mailing it could result in high import duties, while bringing it on the plane may pose logistical challenges due to its size. Suggestions include carefully packing it for flight, considering potential conversion issues with electrical compatibility, or discarding the old system in favor of purchasing a new one locally. Some users advise against shipping due to high costs and offer alternatives like using local marketplaces or cheaper shipping methods like sea freight.

Small shipments are expensive. Ship sea freight is cheaper than air.

Ahmad shop around.

Don't !!! Sell your system back at home. Use the funds to purchase a new system here or used one on Facebook Market place. Just not worth the hassle shipping it over.

You are startting a new life dump the lot and the memories they bring. Cheap enough to buy new in Thailand.

I wouldnt risk trying to get it shipped over. As others have already mentioned, you'll get stung with hefty import tax. I have slso heard stories of some customs officials wanting tea money as well!

If it runs on electric keep in mind the electric requirements may be different than Thailand and may not work without expensive conversion.

If its not possible for you to bring it with you on the plane then you will have to pay the tax unfortunately

put it in boxes

I’d suggest sell and rebuy: new technology is way cheaper than you may remember it 10 years ago - transport / insurance / import duties / worry etc just not worth it

You’re past the time for using relocation exceptions so you’d have to pay full duty/tax. Suggest you research first before trying to ship. You may find with duty, tax and clearance charges you’re better off buying locally

which will partially be their import costs so go do the math. Very likely shipping , duty, tax and clearance will make it not worthwhile

Depending on how big your system is I’d recommend carefully packing it in suitcases and bring it with you.

will not fit in a suitcase

By mail and pay a hefty import duty to boot. If youcan price it when purchased you might save some coins.
