Recently married to my Thai partner...πŸ™. Registered etc in Thailand.πŸ‘

Looking at a Partner Visa to Australia, she has been twice on a tourist visa but I feel she is not ready for settling here, Australia is not good, will miss her family, food, culture etc (she is 44)... I want out, plus the process is fkn expensive.

I feel it is better that I move over there (I'm 54). Work in Western Australia, mining (for years) and feel that I'm better to continue this from a financial perspective. What is my best option? What is the best visa I should go for? I would need, probably need 1 month work in Australia, 1 month in Thailand...and that good vary....could be 3 weeks of work, 6 weeks in Thailand...

Look forward to anyone who does this, has experience in this situation...πŸ™

TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster, who is married to a Thai partner and currently living in Thailand, is exploring visa options as he contemplates moving to Australia for work in the mining industry. He is particularly concerned about the costs and complications of a Partner Visa for his wife, who misses her family and culture in Thailand. Various commenters suggest different visa options, including the Non-Immigrant O visa and retirement visas due to their lower paperwork requirements and flexibility for frequent travel between Thailand and Australia. Recommendations are made for banking requirements and extensions of stay to allow for the poster's desired travel schedule.

I'm also from Western Australia and work in the mining industry

I have a retirement visa here in Thailand and I also have a multi re-entry permit and my roster allows me to come over multiple times a year

My wife also comes to Australia on a tourist visa once or twice a year as well and this works well for the both of us

Good luck with what you decide but this is the best option for me until I move here permanently next year

If you're financial situation allows I'd suggest looking at getting a Non-Imm O visa in Oz. Then arrive in Thailand open a bank account and deposit 800k baht. After it has seasoned for two months apply for an extension of stay (1900baht). At the same time get a multiple re-entry permit (3800baht), you can then come and go as you wish while your extension is valid. For the first year you will have to meet the banked money requirements but for subsequent years you can meet the financial requirements by transferring a minimum 65k baht each and every month for the 12 months leading up to your annual extension of stay. Once on that method you don't need to keep the 800k in the bank and the 65k you transfer every month can be used (just ensure it happens every month and is shown as an international transfer). I wouldn't recommend going down the marriage path, it would prove problematic for FIFO.

The marriage visa there is alot of extra paperwork involved ok it's 400,000 in a Thai bank that is required the retirement visa is 800,000 Baht in a Thai bank but alot less paper work.

If you can afford it I would go the retirement visa as you are more independent on that visa which ever you decide you will also need a multi re entry visa that is 3,800 Baht and you can go in and out as many times as you won't while your yearly visa is valid

If u have the 800k just set your self up for the non O retirement visa intail is 90days and get the yearly extension with a multiple re entry permit u can fly in and out of thailand as u like just have to plan your timing for the yearly extension

if I got married in Thailand, registered etc, would I better of the the marriage visa, 400k etc...

@Jason ******
yes you can use the non O marriage method with only 400k but it also requires more paper work with both of u and partner present when doing the extension and there will be a 30days of consideration for marriage extension as officers will visit your home that u are staying with your partner I'm not sure how it will affect your travel plans as you said you will be travelling in and out....for the retirement extension(800k) it will be approved on the same day if they are happy with all the documents you provide

ta mate... Thanks heaps. I will look into this as that suits me... I'm not after a retirement visa as that is suitable at this stage.

I'm currently with BHP on 8:6, but simply can't do what you do but looking at my options that are more suitable for the both of us.

My colleague, from Australia, married a Thai woman who was there on a working holiday visa. They had a baby.

To get her fully legal, not a partner but wife, it is like 15,000 AUD and takes years (she is not fully recognized 2 years as of May 2024.).

Do tourist till they stop you, then change to retirement visa. Dare i say it probably better doing it with an agency. Thai visa center can get you visa and extension within your time frame. Problem doing extension some places can take more than a month.

You could also get OX or OA visa in australia you would have to check embassies website for more info. The OX is apparently quite easy from Australia

what about a Thai marriage visa as we got married over there and is registered... Better than a retirement visa at this stage you think...πŸ€”πŸ€”

Yes but from what I can see the application for extension takes longer and if you have only a four week window it might not be long enough. I have same problem but being in repair on vessels I never have a regular schedule. I used to get the one year from Loas but that has stopped. I saw Thai visa center can actually do a retirement extension in one week which I may have to do this if I get any hassle coming in on tourist exempt.

OX was only really doable from the Sydney consulate as it was the only one in the world where you didn’t have to prove 3m in a Thai bank account. No idea if it’s still the same since they’ve changed to evisa.

Worth checking into. He going to have same issue as me only in country for short stints got to get timings right for extension.

It's easier for her to go in and out on a Tourist Visa. Our boys have Aussie passports but the hassle and ridiculous expense of the Partner Visa is insane.

I'm thinking retirement visa with multiple entry so you can come and go as you please πŸ™
