I'd like to pick the brains of the intelligent ones in the group please.

I'm looking to get visa to stay in Thailand potentially retire.

I'm an Australian citizen 40yrs old so obviously I won't qualify for the retirement option.

I have a thai partner and was looking into the marriage visa option.

This is from a Thai visa agent:

"3 months Non immigrant O + 1 year marriage visa, the price starts from 95,000 THB"

I appreciate any help.

Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, an Australian citizen aged 40, seeks advice on obtaining a visa to potentially retire in Thailand with a Thai partner. They mention the advice from a Thai visa agent offering a 3-month NON-O visa followed by a one-year marriage visa for 95,000 THB. Community members suggest many DIY resources for visa applications to save costs, criticizing the quoted price. Some share personal experiences advocating for self-application and discussing the requirements and implications of maintaining funds in a Thai bank account for visa extensions.

A few weeks ago I would of said get an agent but due to all the 'bullies' on here saying do it yourself I recently did my own retirement visa and saved myself 20,000 Baht , take it one step at a time and don't stress, immigration are very helpful here .... Oh and thanks 'Bullies' 🙂

I guess when your a grown man and English is your first language there shouldn’t really be any reason to not do things yourself.

Past two years I’ve been here I think I’ve saved in excess of 120,000+THB in so called agent fees through DIY

There may be bullies on here (like any other Facebook group) but using an agent does cost. However you have to weigh up the fee they charge versus the direct cost to you of having 800k in a Thai bank giving you almost zero interest. It may work for you. It may work for others to use an agent.

But the 800K does not have to be in your bank forever does it.

i believe 2 months before and 3 months after getting the yearly extension. Also can't go below 400k at any point. So for the most part it basically sits there the doing nothing for you. Even at 6% interest it pays for the agent and then some to keep that money invested.

it's still your money. But will be in your Thai bank account as long as you want to keep getting extensions that allow you to live in Thailand. Or you switch to the monthly transfers method.

If you want to use an agent, no problem. Depending on where you live it can be a pain in the ass to do it yourself. That price quoted is crazy. For the 1st time a reputable agent should charge no more than 55k-60k baht

It may seem a little daunting at first, but save the money and do it yourself. Plenty of people on this and another visa page that have done it, including myself, and can help with any questions that may come up. Starting with Grahams link is a great start.
