Hey guys, I don't know anything about this, so: what if you have a work permit and you quit your job? Do you have to leave the country immediately? Will it become invalid?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When you quit your job in Thailand, your work permit does not automatically allow you to stay in the country. If you're on a Non-B visa secured from a Thai consulate, or an extension of stay from a Thai immigration office, the process involves going to the Ministry of Labour to cancel your work permit, followed by the immigration office to cancel your extension of stay. After canceling, you must either leave the country that same day or purchase a 7-day extension for 1900 baht to give you time to exit.

Now that we hashed that out ;)

the way it works if you are on an extension of stay is

You go to the Ministry of Labour and cancel your work permit,

THEN

you go to the thai immigration office and cancel your extension of stay with paperwork from your company.

Once it's canceled you have to either leave that very day

OR

you buy a 7 day extension denied stamp for 1900baht that gives you a week to get out of thailand.

- sorry one more thing. In terms of documents the only documents i need to cancel are the work permit cancellation receipt and the letter from work confirming my job is finished? No other documents? No Tax report etc? Also for the 7 day extension what documents will I need for that? Huge thanks!

thanks Tod. My current work are cancelling my work permit and sending the work permit cancellation slip to me on Friday and as soon as I get I am heading to immigration. The letter you mention, is that just the resignation letter which has my final work date? They are talking about tax reports and that’s where they think the issues will arise as my last official day is this Friday but tax report shows my last pay roll as April 23....hence why they think I will have issues with immigration and charged as an overstay.

, YOU cancel your own work permit and extension :/ You take the letter from the school to the labor office and cancel your work permit and then you take that receipt and the letter from school to the immigration office and cancel your extension.

There is no reason to wait until you're almost going to stop work because the immigration office cancels your current extension and stamps you in until the date on the termination paperwork.

Hi Tod - I am in the same position in that I have resigned from my work (I have an extension of stay) - I am on gardening leave until 1st June upon which they will cancel my work permit and extension of stay. Unfortunately work have also informed me that they have put the last day for tax / payroll on the day I resigned not the day I finished working on gardening leave and now say they can't change it and that i might have issues as an 'overstay' based on the tax report date and the cancellation dates not being the same. Do you know if the tax report is a requirement when I go to get my extension of stay cancelled and if deemed as an overstay, I take it I won't be granted the 7 day extension? Any help would be gratefully received.

a work permit doesn't let you stay in the country to begin with :/

Are you on a Non-B visa that you got at a thai consulate (where you leave the country every 90 days) OR are you on an extension of stay that you got at the thai immigration office?

@Cat ****
then you are NOT on any visa, you are on an extension of stay and have a stamp in your passport like this
