What happens if you are denied entry to Thailand? Can you fly to another country instead of being sent back?

What would happen if you are denied entry to Thailand (visa exemption refused for example) Could you perhaps book a flight to Laos or Vietnam or are you going to be sent back to your origin port of embarkation?

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you are denied entry to Thailand, your next steps are controlled by the airline you arrived with, not Thai immigration officers. Depending on the airline's policy, you may be sent back to your country of origin or allowed to fly to a nearby country without a visa. At land borders, immigration may not stamp you in unless you make an issue; otherwise, they may place a refusal stamp and deny you entry. If detained and deported, you might be forced to purchase a ticket back to your country or another destination.

Okay, what controls where you have to go when you get a denial of entry at an airport is NOT the thai immigration officers :O it is the airline you flew in to thailand on. :(

Let me say that one more time so you people have got your head around it. The people that control where you have to go and how you have to go when you are denied entry into thailand at an airport are NOT the immigration officers it is the AIRLINE you flew here on. That's why some will let you go to any country you can get into without a visa, some will let you go back to where you just came from and some make you fly back to the country of passport origin. It is the airline policy on how that specific airline handles people who are denied entry that controls where and how you leave thailand.

If it is a land border, they usually will not stamp you in unless you make a fuss. In which case they will actually place a refusal stamp in your passport with a reason.

Airport bordet they will send you back on the same airline that you came from :(

In cases that you are detained and deported, you can be forced to buy a ticket elsewhere or your home country.

That is not 100% correct :/

Hmm, immigration may be slow to let you fly elsewhere as if you were refused there the airline would only be responsible to return you to Thailand.

correct :/

what about if you have a visa but are still refused? If immigration make you take a flag carrier back, that mean you foot the bill?
Tod *********
You are correct insofar as IF you're allowed to board your plane to come here without a visa AND you're denied entry the airline that brought you here has to lug you back.

However, if you flew here on a budget carrier and are being denied entry the thai immigration office can make you fly back to your country on a "flag carrier".

Thanks for your answers, I am nowhere near risking being denied entry. I was just curious to know about this process and how it goes.

Me too. Thanks for asking.

The airline also has the right to refuse boarding, and they do keep checks on visas across ASEAN. Speak with immigration, find out why they denied you, see if you can sort it. Don’t risk losing money on a flight and being denied boarding let alone arriving at the other countries immigration.

No matter if you have a visa or not, if you're denied entry at the airport it is totally up to the immigration officers if they'll let you go to a country you can get into without a visa OR if they send you back to the country your passport comes from.
Thomas ********************
Well, if you're rejected in the country you came from as well? Let's say, hmm, Laos.

land border dont care where you go, they just dont allow you back in.

Any idea what happens if it's a land border, Tod?

You could be denied entry going back, right? Seems like a bit of an odd situation.
