What documents do I need for a retirement visa in Thailand, and when must they be dated?

Hi.

I'm over 50 years old, and looking at what I need to apply for a retirement visa. The police and doctor letters need to be recent within 90 days. Does that mean within the 90 days of arriving to Thailand, or within 90 days of filing my paperwork through the eVisa website? Also - do I have to get everything notified (Bank letter stating savings/income, Medical and Background check)?

My flight arrived in Bangkok on Nov 15th - and I intend to stay in country until after Songkran in April.

I'd rather not do border runs to reset my visa. I just want to enjoy the beaches and food. And of course to escape the cold weather.

Looking forward to coming back to Thailand.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a retirement visa in Thailand, the required documents, including police clearance and medical letters, need to be recent, specifically within 90 days of application submission. This generally means the documents should be dated within 90 days of your visa application submission through the eVisa website, not your arrival date in Thailand. Additionally, it's essential to ensure that all documents are notarized as required by your local consulate. Proper financial documentation, such as a bank letter verifying savings or income, is also necessary for the application.

You have an excellent plan, GO forward with getting the OA visa that you are in the process of getting the documentation together on. It will more than meet your needs

Good luck with it

, You cannot apply for Non-OA inside Thailand, possible only in your home country (or where you have legal residency). But you can apply for an in-country Non-O visa based on retirement/being over 50 after you enter Thailand on SETV. Then apply for the following 1-year extension based on retirement. (the second option from right in the attachment)

it appears you are applying for this in YOUR country before you come here so what ever your consulate requires as far as the visa is what you have to do. If it says notarized you need to get them notarized, read the requirements carefully is all anyone can tell you OR apply with what you have, believe me the embassy will email you if you haven't uploaded the correct documentation for them

there are no border runs with the STV. ...Special Tourist Visa...Just 90 Day extensions at local Thai immigration office.

You're confusing the STV visa with the METV multiple entry tourist visa which does require border runs.

This is so confusing to me. On the Thai website it says it's only good for 60 days, so I assume that meant I'd have to do a border run every 2 months. Can I stay from Nov 12, 2022 until April 30, 2023 on a STV without having to reset my visa with a border run?

re-read the STV...you are confusing it with the METV multiple entry tourist visa which does require border runs.

i thought the STV was being phased out by the end of September this year. Isn’t it not the case ? That’s the visa I got in with and my first 90 days end on 16 October. I thought I will then have to do a border run and get a tourist visa ( I planned to stay until 8 February, so hopefully sth can be worked out)
James ********
@Patrick ******
that's WHY I said to watch for any announcements regarding the STV.
Tod *********
@Patrick ******
you are correct, as of right now the STV program ENDS Sept 30th and there has been no announcement about it being continued or not

What did the immigration office tell you when you went to ask them about an extension on your STV?

That's the ONLY place that matters. 😕
Patrick *******
@Tod ********
well, the Canberra consulate told me in July before I left OZ ( I got here on 19 July)to go and see the Immigration.

When I arrived, the immigration officer stamped my passport until 16 October ( the normal 90 day period). When I asked him whether he could confirm I could get subsequent 90 day extensions, he said I should go to the Immigration office. I’m not sure he understood what I was asking 😊

I haven’t been to Immigration yet. I guess I should do it asap and will relay the info here.

By the way, would you know what documents I need to extend the visa ?

If I can’t get an extension, I’ll then do a border run and apply for a 60 day tourist visa. Such a pain in the neck though !

@Patrick ******
, you asked the wrong people

The consulate was correct, ask Immigrations, BUT the goof-balls at passport control who stamp you in and out of the country are NOT the correct immigration goofballs to ask. You want the ones IN the immigration office that serves the area where you stay

You need proof of lodging for the next 90 days, proof you still have both those insurance policies for another 90 days and I think that's it. search extend an STV on the group. You aren't the only foreigner who has one believe me

@Tod ********
thank you Todd for your input.

We got the condo till 8 February (date when I’m going back to OZ), but it’s through Airbnb (I provided the Airbnb document when I applied for STV and they seemed happy with it).

Based on your experience, you reckon it will satisfy the Immigration people here ?

And my insurance is valid until 10 February.

Would it be also preferable to do a 90 day report before I rock up to immigration ?
Tod *********
@Patrick ******
sorry you're not gonna get a "based on my experience" answer outta me 😮

You're gonna hafta slog on over to your immigration office, SHOW them the STV and 90 day entry stamp and ASK them what the requirements are at THAT office for you to get the extension. 🙂 That is how you will know.

Keep in mind the people who sold you the visa at the consulate are NOT thai immigrations, they are Ministry of Foreign Affairs workers, they sell visas (among other things). They have abso-tively, posi-lutely NO clue what's required to get an extension from that visa inside the country

Once you're here and to get an extension you deal with the Royal Thai Police Immigration Division, and they are the ones who set the requirements for extensions inside the country.

That's why I said GO and ask them..
Patrick *******
@Tod ********
thanks Todd. Much appreciated.

Do I make an appointment online for visa renewal or can I just rock up there and ask them these questions ?
Tod *********
@Patrick ******
you can show up and ask them questions,

They aren't gonna extend your current stamp as you said it's good until Oct 16 and at most offices you can apply for an extension when you have 30 days or less left on your current stamp SO for you middle of Sept or so

@Tod ********
great. Many thanks 🙏🏾

I have read it carefully. I can get everything notarized. Not an issue. My main question is that it must be recent, within 90 days. Do they mean I must do this within 90 days of arriving, or that these documents have to be within 90 days applying for the retirement visa. I'm in the USA, and I'm disabled and would rather not have to do border runs.
James ********
@Rob ********
Suggest that you wait for any announcements about the STV visa. It's supposed to end Sept 30, 2022. BUT IF they extend it for another year, it would give you up to 9 months stay in Thailand. Watch the coming weeks for any announcements.

9 months without border runs or check-ins with immigration with my whereabouts? I'm disabled. There are days where I can't get things done. I just want a hassle-free, worry-free winter, watching sunrises and sunsets on the beaches. I'd rather not let a month go by when my flight is Nov 12th. The wheels of American beurocracy turn very slow, and I want to get my visa paperwork done ASAP so I can concentrate on contacting utilities, the post office, etc... to suspend service, and set up auto-payment on electricity and home alarm monitoring. It's already September 2nd and the only thing I've got is a valid passport.
James ********
@Rob ********
then get the OA visa...

Thank you so much James. If I was younger and in better health, I'd be OK with having to do border runs and go with a STV. At this point in my health, I just want to take the path of least resistance.

@Rob ********
90 days of applying, nothing to do with when you are arriving here

Thank you. I will contact my doctor, the police, and my bank on Monday morning and get the process started.

Rob Farrell sound's to me that you're applying for the OA visa for retirement. If so everything is going to be done while you are in the USA. NOT after you arrive into Thailand.
