TLDR : Answer Summary
To enter Thailand under the 60-day tourist visa exemption, you'll generally need just your passport. However, it is recommended to have proof of onward or return travel, such as a flight itinerary, and possibly accommodation arrangements, although these are not consistently required. Ensure that your nationality is on the visa exemption list, and be prepared for potential questions at the departure check-in.

Be sure that your country is one of the visa exempt , next time , give more details if you want others to do your research for you
Then you had luck. Depending on the visa, e.g. multiple entry tourist visa, you do not need it. But he comes with no visa, aka visa exempt. So he needs it. Regarding multiple entry tourist visa, I do not remember if you need one. If so, it will be mentioned on the eVisa web site.

You might also need to show you have a place to stay (it’s not consistent) and sometimes a return ticket out but the return ticket is more often requested by the agent checking you into your flight from the departure country
no airlines require a return ticket. An onward ticket works as well. You don’t have to return from where you arrived.

Look in the mirror. If you look like you have no money you will be asked more questions
I don’t get much grief now but traveling to the Europe when I was younger I was grilled. I suspect it’s similar in Asia as I wasn’t asked for anything on most of my trips last year (
in Europe. Wait and watch it happen, again and again. More and more airlines are refusing the onwardtickets, because they are blocking the ETIX system. These fakes are not real tickets, they are just reservations, and airlines hate them
I am on many of these groups and have yet to see a first hand post of someone using an onward ticket who had it refused. I have seen second hand reports such as yours so I am doing just what you say, waiting and watching.
agreed, I haven't read a report of anyone being refused, yet, however I think it is going to happen. I won't risk it, better buy a "real" cheap one-way ticket like Air Asia from DMK to Siem Reap for 45 USD and know I got a guaranteed onward travel proof
never heard of that before but then I’ve never been asked for a ticket of any description in the 8 years I’ve been there. 3 times last year and twice this year!
if you have never been asked doesn't mean anything. These are the existing rules, the airline can ask for proof of onward travel or they won't let you board the flight
you get visa exempt on arrival. You don’t need a visa. Just rock up and get stamped in for 60 days. You can extend for a further 30 days at a local immigration centre. They have one in most main cities / tourist destinations.
