TLDR : Answer Summary
Based on community feedback, a letter of invitation or proof of accommodation is generally not required when applying for the 60-day tourist visa in Thailand. Applicants have reported that simply providing an address of accommodation (like a hotel or residence) is sufficient for the visa application. However, there were some discussions suggesting that verification might occur at later stages, particularly for extensions.

No you just need to show proof of addresz, I just recently went for my 2nd 60day extension and they asked my fiance for his ID card to verify
They ask for a place of residence on the application form. I just booked a hotel in Bangkok for a week and gave them that address. My visa got approval straight away.
