Hi everyone !

Are there any parents out there familiar with the process / documents required of registering a baby as a Thai citizen ?

The baby won’t receive it automatically as I’m South African but the father is Thai x Australian so I know it can be applied for. I’ve tried doing my own research but the information can be a bit overwhelming so would appreciate guidance from someone who has done it before !

Thanks : )

TLDR : Answer Summary
To register a baby as a Thai citizen when one parent is Thai, the essential document required is the birth certificate. The registration can be carried out at the Thai Embassy in your country or in Thailand, and it can be done at any age. It's important to check the embassy's website for specific requirements and procedures. If the father has a Thai passport, and you are married, the process is generally straightforward, often initiated by the hospital. However, if there are complexities regarding marital status or passport ownership, it may require additional documentation.

Thailand uses jus sanguinis, just having a Thai parent grants the Thai citizenship. Just register the baby at Thai Embassy

I think that if you are married and the father has a Thai passport it is just a matter of registering the baby. Usually this is done by the hospital. Probably it will be more complicated if he has no Thai passport or if you are not married. (I assumed that you will give birth in Thailand...)

Hi I m half Thai. If the baby's father has Thai nationality the baby can obtain nationality. Birth certificate is essential. Thai Embassy at your country will help you through. In fact on the webpage of the Thai Embassy of your country you will find information. Registration can be done at any age, abroad at the Embassy or in Thailand. If it is a boy he will have to go through military service for a year or two when he grows up. Lol
