What do I need to know about doing a border run to renew my 180-day visa in Thailand?

How’s it been going for those choosing a border run to renew the 180 days? Anything I should know? The time is approaching and with it being such a new Visa I’m not finding much helpful info online. I’ve heard rumors of complications like needing to pay, needing to show paperwork, or needing to stay out of the country for several days before re-entry.

Thanks for the help!

TLDR : Answer Summary
Several recent experiences regarding border runs for renewing the 180-day visa in Thailand suggest that the process is relatively straightforward. Users reported easy entries back into Thailand with minimal requirements, primarily the e-visa QR code and any necessary stamps. Some travelers mentioned specific borders, like those from Laos or Cambodia, and advised avoiding the Poipet border crossing due to complications. Overall, it seems that as long as the proper visa and documentation are maintained, re-entry should not pose significant issues.

If I am not mistaken, if you have a proper visa for long term stay and need to just leave Thailand at the end of each 180 day stay limit, you should mot face any issues coming back in. Just make sure all your stamps are in place, the original visa issued is in your phone or a print out is on hand, then should mot have any issues. It is not like the visa runs of the old days where you try to come back with a new visa exempt stamp. You can stay for the length of your visa but it has to be up to 180 days each time.

There's several VERY good options shared in this Post... BUT whatever you do, AVOID POIPET BORDER CROSSING. IT'S PROBLEMS FOR FOREIGNERS, regardless of what Thai Visa you hold.

i have many friends who have lived here for tens of years, telling me the same. And its not only for border runs, but also if you want to actually go to cambodia by car. Also said to be very busy border

Just returned from Chiang Khong to Huay Xai (Laos) border run as my initial 180-day DTV entry was set to expire. Paid 25 baht for bus across the border, 2000 baht for Laos entry/exit stamps, 25 baht for bus back and got 180-day entry stamp upon return. No questions asked, no documents needed. Hopefully it will stay this simple!

There are dozens of post and comments in this groups about people who have done it without any issues or questions asked.

You just leave and come back, all you need is your e-visa QR code.

The QR code on my visa print out doesn’t connect to a webpage, the browser just says “error”. I’m hoping this won’t be an issue! 😱😆

did you think the Thai government would allow you into their private government database?

Anonymous participant 708 Wasn't sure if it was just a digital copy of the visa print out

@Susannah *******
it's a code used in the immigration system. You can't access it.
