4th time entering with DTV

This time we were asked insane questions

Me and My husband are both Myanmar citizens

As usual, queued in line.

When we meet IO, she asked my husband “what do you do with DTV” he reply “digital consultant” and she asked “you come alone” and reply “with my wife” and call me

“What did she do” we reply “I’m dependent”

And then IO took our passports and made us wait other side ( don’t ask any further questions or documents, said just go and wait there)

5 minutes later other IO said follow him and said wait in the room ( there is a lot of passengers already waiting there) after 10 minutes the previous IO moved us to another room and said fill the forms which describe our information money, job, address purposes of living in Thailand ,type of visa etc.,

After waiting 30 minutes no one asked us any questions and when we asked is there something wrong, that IO didn’t reply.

After more than 1 hour of waiting, another IO finally showed up and asked questions ( IO asked every 1 question pr 1 time and go back to chat with other IOs and come back again and ask 1 more question and then go back again to chat with other IOs)

What is your job?

Bank accounts- Amount of money?

Job contract ?

Pay slip?

And we showed every document needed

IO said if you don’t work in Thailand, you don’t need to live in Thailand

We said we don’t work in Thailand but my husband needs Good Internet as he’s a Digital nomad

IO said you don’t need to apply DTV because you may have free visa since we are ASEAN 14 days free visa

We said we have to apply DTV because my husband have other remote jobs and it’s need to attend conferences every 2 months in Bangkok

We showed the ordinary job contract, pay slip - applied for DTV and additional other digital nomad job contract which need to attend conferences in Bangkok

Very serious question IO said us “do you even know DTV ,what khind of visa it is?

We said my husband is Digital nomad and apply DTV under digital nomad

I am the Dependent and that IO can’t accept my bank account which joint with my husband

We said I applied DTV under my husband sponsorship

IO even shown as type of DTV form and we pointed out those Digital nomad and dependent category

IO said nothing and go back to chat with other IOs and come back again

And then IO asked “why you apply DTV in Cambodia, since you can apply online”

We said we are ASEAN, got free visa by every ASEAN countries and we visited over there and we decided in which country we would like to stay and we like Thailand so we applied from Cambodia ( we got DTV 2 years ago not e-visa/ got sticker on passport)

They are very sensitive for applying from Cambodia and got serious questions ( we visited Cambodia 1 time only and applied DTV from there)

And than IO asked return tickets

my husband said we ‘d never been asked for return tickets with DTV and IO said you don’t know what is DTV and we have to explain DTV again and reply “since we can stay 6 months, we don’t need to decide right now, which date or which country we go later.”

And then IO go back to chat with other IOs and they said no need return tickets for DTV

Finally IO said come sit here to another desk and scan our passports and stamp and we go in

It’s took over 2 hours experience

We don’t have previous Thai ED visa or visa extension or any cancellation and got arrival/departure stampes from other countries .

Got well dressed

I’m just sharing my own experience and sorry for my bad grammar
Answer summary
A Myanmar couple shared their challenging experience while entering Thailand for the fourth time with a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). Upon approaching immigration, they faced an intense interrogation with the immigration officer asking numerous questions about their financial status, job details, and the purpose of their stay. Despite presenting all the necessary documents and explaining their situation, they were subjected to long waits and skepticism, particularly due to their nationality and the country from which they applied for the visa (Cambodia). The officers expressed doubts about the relevance of their DTV application and questioned the need for a return ticket, leading to significant stress during the entry process.

It’s not the DTV per se. Looks more like a case of passport / identity being questioned on why you have to live across the border in Thailand.

Well as a DTV of your calibre, you aren't staying long enough nor spending enough, not the kind of people DVT is actually for.

DVT is actually for long term (which is why it's in years) digital nomads are the Thais are targeting high value ones. Those that stay in
*****
baht condos in bkk type. Or drink themselves silly every night by the sea type.

For your case, you should have just entered and exited on a tourist pass when needed.

Fellcor Lim you seem to have made lots of racist assumptions just because they are from Myanmar. Likely exactly like the immigration officers did.

@Pui ****
Assumptions are what IO has to work with. Who has the time to sit down interview everyone for an hour?

Don't you know you make assumptions everyday, every moment in your life? When you wake you brush your teeth, do your think about it? No. It's on auto pilot mode no? That's assumption working. Assumptions save time and energy.

Let's hear from you what the IO officers should do, in a shorter time frame with less prejudice.
Pui *****
Pui *****
Fellcor Lim We're not disagreeing that's what the IOs likely did, but that doesn't make it right, especially from YOU. You seem like you might be Chinese from your last name. Should I assume you operate scam centres at the border, like to "follow the flag" in giant tour groups, like to drag your luggage around town everywhere when you go shopping, and have no concept of personal space or limiting your speaking volume in public, just because you are Chinese? Likely none of those apply to you, but hey "assumptions save time and energy" so I can assume you are a low caliber tourist just because of your last name, right?

OP
Fellcor Lim lol I’ve been staying at
*****
thb/ month condo in Bangkok for 2 years already and spent my holidays at Maldives water villa or villa at danang like every 6 months during in my stay at Thailand I travel every beach or resort every 2 months

Even my travel hand carrybag is cost over 100,000 Thai baht and spending 20,000 Thai baht at duty free for my make up or present

If you think I’m not spending enough in Thailand, how much is the right amount a DTV holder should be spending?
Fellcor *****
Fellcor *****
GrayMouse4613 Yes but how many months you are staying there lol? Ah you just gave yourself the answer to your situation. You spent time away from Thailand at Maldives and Vietnam. That's a red flag. Second, we don't know, nor does the IO, that you indeed travel to said beach resort (that contribute to the economy of the country). You could be visiting via Google map for all we know. Everyone wanting something will paint the sky red and blue, add in sprinkles just to get what they want. But once inside, who is checking? Thus the IO check strictly outside whenever possible. It's the final gate of defence.

The IO I don't think are good at discerning real bags from fakes. I mean most Chinese influencers are known to be decked out in an entire wardrobe of fakes when the netizens go detective mode. They are there to determine if you are a risk, real purposes stated and not someone dangerous. I don't think even if you flash your Bentley car keys they will blink.

Well on the spending, unless you gave the receipts, i can say it didn't happen and one of us is right, equal chances,
*****
no?

I think it's about staying (or a desire) long term, with exits mostly to your home country as a baseline. That's what normal dtv do. This ensures a steady steam of income into the economy, a steady job remotely and a desire to stay long term.

You claimed to have stayed for two years in a
*****
condo, did you show your monthly rent outflow from the bank? Else it didn't happen (at least in IO eyes), you can be staying in ramkhamhaeng at a 3500-4000baht apartment eating mama noodles for all they know. Between the two extremes, if we put you in the middle, you aren't borderline making the mark. A 8k apartment (unless you verified it, I am going to halve whatever you claim) for two is the same as two people renting 2x 4k apartment, which is the extreme version I am talking about.

You do realize duty free, means less for the country no? A 20k item cost them, say 15-18k to purchase. Your real input into the economy, MINUS the duty free, might be just an injection of 2-3k for all that 20k spent. That's just 2 so-so dinners a couple will spend as a normal tourist, for two days. Hardly worth mentioning.

Lastly I think the conference statement may have triggered another red flag. Conferences are short term. If you need to visit one for work, a tourist pass will do. Why mention it if you are on(going for) DTV? If am on business owner visa in Thailand. I don't tell them I need to go attend meetings with important people (I don't) as an entry point. That's part and parcel of every business owner. Just stating it, seems to be more hurtful to your position than helping.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. They are just checking on you whether you have relevant jobs. Nowadays agents sell dtv with 50,000 baht. Applicants don’t need anything to provide. Scammers apply dtv in those channels. These are the consequences of those applicants. I do recommend to add more visa stickers by visiting countries like Japan.

Mention your other activities that you intend to do during your stay but never mention the work word unless you are questioned how you are supporting yourself. But you should mention your savings and be prepared to show how much cash you have first.

Remember You're dealing with the lowest pay grade government officer here. So keep it simple as much as you can.
LongTimeLivi************
LongTimeLivi************
I'm really sorry you had to deal with that. With the recent military clashes spilling over the border into Mae Sot, Thai immigration has drastically tightened security and scrutiny on Myanmar passports.

Because of the high tension, some officers could be hyper-suspicious or acting on prejudice, leading them to over-interrogate legitimate DTV holders. It's incredibly frustrating, but the border situation has made them highly paranoid right now.

I had the same thing im in a student visa and I was told to get a DTV instead. Their questions to me was about how can I support myself and not work - im a retired veteran US Army they didnt accept that because im too young to be retired im 42 retired at 37.

I had to show my bank account to show I have steady funds to support me.

They called my old school to verify its legitimacy I left thailand per requirements after my first ed visa expired came back to get another visa

I entered visa exempt.

I even had to demostrate what I learned with my first ed visa ( self defense ) this ed visa im taking thai classes.

They are getting very strict with visa and the immigration at the air ports are their own entity from immigration in thailand.

Just to remind everyone IO at point of entry hold authority to deny entry and cancel visas at will

Its good you had all your documents on hand.

I honestly think immigration is killing their own tourist industry because of things like this and its thanks to people coming here breaking thai law and abusing visas

“If you don’t work in Thailand, you don’t need to live in Thailand”. Seriously? IO doesn’t know what DTV is all about?

I also had an experience kinda like yours. But it only took 20 minutes. And not that much silly questions.

Must be the most frustrating 2-hour at the airport.
Steven *********
Steven *********
Anonymous participant 560 It’s half right, I think there is nuance in how foreigners understand the DTV and the intent that Thais had in it. It’s not a visa to ‘live’ in Thailand, it’s a visa to allow more flexibility for nomads, health tourists, education etc. Whereas the average foreigner seems to think it’s a 5 year residence visa.
Anonymous ******************
Anonymous ******************
Steven Rostron DTV is specifically for those who want to stay in Thailand but do not take the quota from the Thai local job market.

Thats why I can’t make any sense of IO’s statement “If you don’t work in Thailand, you don’t need to live in Thailand.”

This is just one of the silly questions we have to endure every time we set foot in the country.

This is racial profiling at its peak.

I do hope Thai law enforcement will develop better procedures to crackdown on scammers. For a law abiding foreigner, this is frustrating, humiliating to be treated like a criminal. Every time.
Anonymous ******************
Anonymous ******************
Steven Rostron How is it relevant whether there are foreigners who confuse it as residency visa?

This is the official statement about DTV from Thai embassy “1.1. travel and remotely work (workcation) in Thailand e.g. foreign talent, freelancer, and digital nomad/remote worker”

“3. Period of Stay:

Holder of DTV is entitled to stay in Thailand for a maximum period of 180 days. They may apply for an extension of stay at the Office of the Immigration Bureau located at”

“4. Validity of Visa: 5 years”

On the visa sticker it says “Multiple entry”.

Legit DTV holders are working freelance or remote job, applied all necessary documents at the embassy. They legally claimed DTV from Thai embassy. But they got silly questions and treated like a criminal at the airport for what? For being citizen of certain country? This is the frustration most legit DTV holders have experienced.

I am aware that the country is having issues with scammers holding DTV. But does it really justify the racial profiling at the airport?

Cracking down scammers should not involve treating every digital nomad like a criminal, don’t you think?

DTV is a legal visa from the Government of Thailand. And there are digital nomads staying in Thailand with this visa. Many of us chose Thailand because it’s the most convenient in ASEAN to stay in many aspects. And we thank Government of Thailand for this.

But being treated like a criminal every time we enter the airport is not right. That’s what I’m saying.

Immigration just wants to make sure you aren’t working locally as all, so occasionally they investigate DTV holders for illegal work.

@John *********
This is what AI says: "Yes, the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is specifically designed for digital nomads, freelancers, and remote workers to live, work, and experience life in Thailand legally. It is a 5-year multiple-entry visa that allows you to stay for up to 180 days per entry, which can be extended for an additional 180 days at a local immigration office."
Gabriele **********
Gabriele **********
@John *********
Well, you can actually stay even longer, but you have to renew the visa within the country and pay more. In any case, if they allow stays of 180 days, then that's how long you're allowed to stay, and I think if you stay six months at a time then it's obvious that at some level you are living full-time in Thailand. I don't think this is against the spirit of the visa.
John **********
John **********
@Gabriele *********
why do you think it's restricted to 180 days?
Christopher ***********
Christopher ***********
GrayMouse4613 Wow! You now think there might be four triggers for all that questioning? 1) Myanmar citizen 2) Fourth entry 3) Visited and applied for DTV from Cambodia 4) 'Long' stays approaching 180 days.
Gabriele **********
Gabriele **********
@John *********
Who says the DTV isn't designed for that? My understanding is that it is meant for living in Thailand.
John **********
John **********
GrayMouse4613 and maybe stay out a bit longer, digital nomads should be able to work from anywhere

@John *********
yeah we assume that next time we won’t stay until 180 days

Thank you for pointing out 🙏

PositiveLynx7934 The ones talking about scaring are most obvious not fully legit.

As you say, if you are legit there is no issue, and thus no reason to fear.

Nationalities and patterns might influence chance to get checked.

This particular case might be a combination of several things, living continuous in Thailand, having Myanmar nationality, applying for visa in Cambodia.

And of course 2 hours delay is not a pleasont experience, but it is also not the end of the world.

attending conferences is OK but not organising them. Although every 2 months sounds a bit too close to interacting with Thai entities to me, I definitely wouldn't have mentioned it.
GrayMo*******

OP
@Adam ******
as first we don’t tell them he has another remote job but IO confirmed that we don’t work in Thailand and don’t need to stay in Thailand

So we proof that why we need DTV and need to stay in Thailand because he have to attend conferences in Bangkok every 2 months

And then we show again original remote job contract which we apply DTV and other remote job contract.
Tore *********
Tore *********
@Adam ******
A simple business meeting, seminar or short conference doesn’t require work permit in Thailand. Its actually specifically defined as not considered working in Thailand. People travel all over the world for work related conferences without having to get a work permit for it.

But I also wouldn’t have mentioned that part.

***********************************************************************
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Tore ********
That is correct, but when you say you need to visit those conferences on a regular basis in Bangkok and that is one of the reasons you apply for DTV, that might sound as working in Thailand.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Sounds incredibly frustrating. I’m so glad you eventually got through.

This is another example of why even after receiving a DTV, the stress that might accompany it doesn’t seem worth it. People keep recommending it, but the experience of application and entry is too inconsistent for me to feel confident with it.
Bria ****
Bria ****
I'm in the same boat. Was ready to apply until I saw a lot of the posts on here and I am now really hesitant. I recently tried going to the consulate in Vietnam to ask a few questions and get some in person guidance but they stopped me at the entrance, and rudely told me that there was no one for me to talk to and that everything is done online. The thing with all online, is they can deny you without any reason, and I would want to know and think it's fair to know why it was denied and how to fix it for the next time, if spending that amount of money applying.
Christopher ***********
Christopher ***********
StunningPeacock6390 Nobody forcing you to apply for a DTV. Others will continue to recommend the DTV and provide advice for those who want one. Strange that threads are full of reports by existing DTV holders who've never faced a single question let alone the 'stress and incredible frustration' you mention. Don't worry, your lack of confidence in applying for and entering Thailand with one won't put anyone else off obtaining a DTV.
StunningP**********
StunningP**********
@Christopher **********
No one forced you to respond to my comment. It’s unfortunate that you have a DTV and instead of just using it in the real world to enjoy Thailand, you use your precious time, energy, and desire to be nasty —unprovoked— to strangers in FB groups. You could have just kept scrolling and left well enough alone.
Pui *****
Pui *****
@Christopher **********
the groups also have many posts from people with issues. Obviously most people won't, but enough issues are being reported that it should be a valid concern. Just like almost everyone enters without being asked for the 20K proof of funds requirement, but enough people get asked that people should make informed decisions about the risk. Or just like most people enter the USA without issues, but there are enough reports in the past year of people (even from many first world countries) being detained and questioned and having their social media fully scrutinised that many people are concerned about travel there or avoid travel there if possible.

Return/onward tickets aren't a requirement for DTV holders. Possession of 20,000 THB cash or equivalent is a tourist visa requirement so does apply. Whether you believe the original post to be genuine or not is up to you. The post I was replying to; (StunningPeacock6390) screams at me as being a 'sock puppet' troll response dissing the DTV.
