TLDR : Answer Summary
A Canadian facing an expiring 30-day waiver visa can extend their stay by applying for a 30-day extension at a local immigration office. Alternatively, they could obtain a Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) at a Thai consulate in a neighboring country, which would grant 60 days and could also be extended by 30 days. They should prepare necessary documentation, such as proof of funds and a rental contract, particularly if applying in Vientiane or Savannakhet.

Tourist Visa, apply if you stayed less than 90 days in past 6 month (they count time spend under any visa), show own Thai Book Bank with balance THB 20,000.- up OR print out from your Bank account from home country value USD 700.-up. Onward air ticket or Rental Contract not required.
Please ensure that your submitted documents are real.

Vientiane
Tourist Visa, if you had previously some Tourist visas your application will be considered more carefully. Vientiane is now asking for proof of funds, Book Bank with balance THB 20,000.- up OR print out from Bank account from home country value USD 700.-up. Onward air ticket is not required, but prepare Rental Contract.
best way is to get the visa or the stay which covers your activities in Thailand. Are you planning to stay as tourist in Thailand and travel around for sight seeing?
Do you like to study in Thailand the next 90 days?
Do you like to work as Volunteer these 90 days?
Do you plan international seminars or coaching sessions?
If you plan on just being a tourist, former advice sounds good.

In that case, get a Single Entry Tourist Visa, which gives you 60 days on entry and could be Extended with another 30 days in case of. But 60 days should be more than enough for a lawyer to set up a business for you and your partners
I am planning to start a business here and apply later for the smart visa but I need first some time to prepare everything.

Apply 30 days extension first. Then another option is getting Single Entry Tourist Visa at Thai consulate in neighboring country. SETV get you stamped for 60days, and it is also eligible to apply 30days extension.

Whenever is same unless you have extensive history being inside Thailand on tourist status, but meeting their requirements. (standard tourist easily meet those requirements in any country around SEA)
Singapore is okay, you just need to apply online first, then follow their direction to apply all documents (physically) at embassy. Bright side is you can apply online when you are still in Thailand.
