Hi there,

I am hoping that someone will help me with my answer:

I am Canadian and I am planning to travel to Thailand for 5 months. What kind of visa should I get?

Should I apply for 60 days single entry tourist visa and then get 30 days extension at Koh Samui for 1900 BAT?

Then should I do a visa run and get another 30 days extension? After that extension, can I extend for 30 more days at Koh Samui or do I have to leave the country again?

What is the best and easiest way to spend 5 months in Thailand visa wise?

Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Canadian planning a 5-month stay in Thailand has several visa options. The most popular suggestion is to apply for a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV), which allows for 60-day stays each entry, and with careful planning, can be extended for nearly 9 months. Alternatively, two Single Entry Tourist Visas could be used, or a combination of a Single Entry Visa with extensions and visa runs. It's advisable to check the requirements at the Thai consulate, particularly regarding return tickets for the METV.

Go for Multiple entry tourist visa for 6 months

5 months.. that’s easy.. two Single entry tourist visas (cost around 2900 baht with extensions. Only need 1 extension)

Or one Single entry tourist visa and visa exempt (cost around 4800 baht because you will need 2 extensions).

You could get the first Tourist visa before you set off first, and then get the next one from a nearby country.

Here's the thai consulate in Toronto, It only shows you need to show a ticket TO thailand for the 6 Month METV

email the consulate you will deal with there, explain that you can show proof of going to thailand but that your travel plans are not yet set and you may exit the country by land. See what they say.

For the METV a paper copy of your flight itinerary must be submitted showing at least the applicant's first entry into Thailand. <- that says your FIRST entry to thailand

, you hold a canadian passport, LOOK at the website of the thai consulate in your province and see what the requirements are for a 6 month METV. <- That visa (as others have said) is the one that fits your needs the best.

Your best option is the METV. It’s valid for 6 months so you can come and go as you please during those six months. Each time you enter you get 60 days stay. If you time it right and do a border bounce just before it expires you get another 60 days which can be extended for a further 30 days at a immigration office in Thailand giving you nearly 9 months.

If you do need a ticket out (usually it means a ticket out of Thailand not one specifically back to your home country) buy one to a nearby country.

not sure about the requirements. Google your local consulates website. It will surely list the exact requirements for the METV.

to apply for this visa....I need to have a returned ticked back? Otherwise, I cannot apply for this visa, correct?

after 60 plus 30, as you said, you can do border run for 30 plus 30, usually you have to leave the country, but you could still get another 7 days extension (actually a denial) at Immigration. If that not suit your timeline leave and get another 30 days entry stamp.

I did the exact same thing last year April - November, but I went to the border at Mae Sai. 60 day tourist visa, 3 extensions, and 2 land border crossings equaled 7 months. I was hassled by immigration this morning when I returned on another 60 day tourist visa that was issued in my home country USA. I spoke with 3 officers before they let me in. I was in USA 14 November - 20 January. Maybe I came back to soon.

I plan to apply for the METV next trip. I don’t know if it’s any better but it would be something different in my passport.

would it be better to apply for multiple entry visa? I can have 60 days then leave the country and then do it two more times?
