Hi! Before I purchase our flights, I'd love to have some clarification for entry for canadians. We are a family of 5 wanting to visit Thailand. We have about 4-5 months, would love to spend 2 in Thailand and then travel to malaysia/Vietnam and fly home from Vietnam. Do we need to apply for visa ahead of time? Or can we do the free entry, then either border run or pay and extend for the extra 30 days. And are they ok if we have a flight home from Vietnam when we land in thailand , or do we need proof of leaving Thailand?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Canadian passport holders can enter Thailand for up to 30 days without a visa. However, for stays longer than 30 days, it is advisable to apply for a Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) in advance, granting a 60-day stay with the option to extend by an additional 30 days at a local immigration office. Travelers may need proof of onward travel upon entry, which can be requested by airlines rather than Thai immigration upon arrival.
Not true. I extended my SETV last week at Chaengwattana. Use the online booking system and make an appt. I was in and out in 30 minutes. Simple n quick.
aahhh yeah okay, good point Ellie. I live in On Nut and it was an hour each way in my car. 😉 I was thinking purely how quick it was inside the building 😉🤔
You must show onward flights to leave from Thailand if you are asked.
It's more airlines to ask before you check-in at the departure airport to ask for proof of onward flights than the Thai immigration at the arrival. But you need to check the airline policy on your own.
As Canadian passport holders, you can enter Thailand on visa-exempt for 30 days and it's eligible for a 30-day tourism extension for 1,900 baht at the local immigration office ONCE.
As a rule, you are supposed to have a tourist visa (TR or Single Entry Tourist Visa, SETV) if you plan to stay more than 30 days.
Having SETV gives you:
- 60 day 59 night stay on entry to Thailand, also eligible for an additional 30 days extension
- no need to use a half to one day at the immigration office to apply for tourism extensions
- the official fee for a SETV is cheaper than for an extension
