Hey! So I'm planning on buying a vehicle. First a motorcycle and then a car. How does purchasing a vehicle work?

I know I need a resident certificate, but do I have to purchase the vehicle before getting that?

Do I buy the vehicle, get the info on the vehicle from the seller and then get the resident certificate afterwards? Just hans over the money and trust that it isn't stolen or something?

And I know there are these stickers on the vehicles, which I assume is tax. Where do I go to rnew it if needed?
Answer summary
Purchasing a vehicle in Thailand as an expat involves several key steps. Firstly, you will need a resident certificate to complete the purchase, especially for ownership transfer. The process typically starts with finding a dealership or seller, discussing the details, and agreeing on a price that includes registration. After buying the vehicle, the seller should provide the necessary transfer papers and the vehicle registration (green book). You must then visit the Department of Land Transport (DLT) to transfer ownership into your name and renew the vehicle tax if required. Additionally, to avoid issues with stolen vehicles, it's advised to purchase from a reputable dealer who can show the green book.

Certificate of residency is needed at the DLT when you change the ownership and you get your name in the green book. Taxes can be paid in any small shops doing the yearly inspection (if needed), just search google maps. You cannot buy one withoit the cert. Buy from a shop, they can show you the greenbook that its not stolen. If you suspect they sell stolen vehicles, change shop.

Google maps is great since they have reviews

I walked into a dealership with passport, residence certificate, and cash and walked out with my bike and keys

The way I did it was bought the bike. The seller filled out all of the transfer papers and gave me the green book. A few weeks later went to the DLT in Chiang Mai and transferred ownership and renewed tax and insurance all at the same time

You walk to a dealership of the brand of your choice.

Look at the bike/car, discuss details, like extra lights, colour and day of delivery.

Make a price including registration and the shop will tell you what you need and when to do.
