What are the rules for renewing a Non-OA visa by exiting and re-entering Thailand?

I have a question on the O-A visa.

Myself and my wife arrived in Thailand on 5th April 2021 on a Non O-A multiple entry visa from Australia.

We left Thailand 9 months later in November 2021 to travel Mexico and Costa Rica.

We seem to remember something about the Non O-A visa resetting for a further 12 months if you fly out and back in.

If so what are the rules and regulations in doing this?

We can’t seem to find any information.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as we are keen to return to Thailand for another year or so.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Non-OA visa is valid for one year from the date of issue, not the date of first use. To reset the visa for another 12 months, one must re-enter Thailand before the visa expires. Medical insurance for the duration of the stay is required. Furthermore, if the holder is returning after the visa has expired, they will need to apply for a new visa, and the dependent visa regulations stipulate that the spouse cannot apply for a dependent visa within Thailand and should instead apply at a Thai Embassy before arrival.

Yes - the 12 month validity commences on the date of issue and not the date of arrival. I have the OA visa from the end of February, but won't be arriving in Thailand until early April. Therefore my renewal date will be end of February 2023. I, too, am coming from Australia.

Thank you all

We can’t get back in before the initial one year is up.

We will look at the Non O visa once we come back in.

I have an Thailand account so can transfer the required money into it.

Question being can my Australian wife come in under the same visa or does she need to also have an account with the correct amount ?

Sorry for asking all the questions

While you can obtain your Non-O visa in Thailand, your wife cannot apply for a follow-on, dependent Non-O visa in Thailand. So, you would need to obtain both your Non-O visas from a Thai Embassy or Consulate before arriving in Thailand. Not all are currently offering the Non-O dependent visa though. You would have to ask your Thai Embassy or Consulate.

The important date is the date you received the visa, not the date you first used it. It is only valid for one year from the date you received the visa. If you received the visa before March 13 then it has expired. If you received it after March 14 then you better hurry, and don't forget about the date change when you cross the international date line, as it is one day later in Thailand from Mexico and it goes by the date in Thailand. If it hasn't expired then you've got just a very short time to return.

If you entered April 2021 it sounds like your visa is getting close to its expiry date. If you get back in before that date, you will be stamped in for 12 months. Take out a 12-month insurance policy to commence the day you arrive in Thailand. No need to transfer any money to Thailand

The OA visa is valid for a year from issue. On any entry you will get stamped in for a year, providing you have the medical insurance needed for that term.
