Is One-Year Insurance Mandatory for O-A Visa and What Happens When Leaving Thailand?

Two questions:

1) When applying for a Non-Immigrant O-A Visa is an ONE year insurance mandatory, or is an insurance covering until the date of your “out of Thailand”-ticket sufficient? If the latter, I assume you will only be granted a period of stay until the insurance expiration date...

2) If returning to Thailand again after leaving for x months (within one year after the visa issuing date) will the O-A Visa still be valid, provided insurance coverage for this period of visit is taken out?

Thanks in advance and have a nice weekend!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Non-Immigrant O-A Visa requires an insurance policy that covers the full year of the visa duration. Temporary insurance valid only until the departure date is insufficient. Upon leaving Thailand, the O-A Visa remains valid for re-entry within the one-year period if insurance is in place for the new visit.

So the simple solution is when you leave Thailand you cancel the policy, get a refund on the unused portion and buy a new one when you come back in, ensuring you always have a year's cover. Of course you can always buy one to show the authorities and cancel it within the 14-day cooling off period and get a full refund

@Alan ******
here is the other scenario that's becoming a problem. That is the fact of getting the certificate signed for a non thai policy and entered in the database. Without that, they appear not to be accepting the insurance. No International insurance company appears to want to sign a Thai issued guarantee certificate.

The whole duration of stay (which is one year, regardless how long you intend to stay) if you only want to stay for three months, then this is not your ideal choice of visa type. For three months, a single entry tourist visa would be sufficient. And in case you wish to stay longer, you can wring 6 to 9 months out of a Multi Entry Tourist Visa

And that is why I asked where. It seems that the Thai Embassy only ask for a health insurance for the period you stay inside Thailand, at least that is according the web page

Alan Sneum you need an insurance for your permitted stay. The O-A visa is issued as a 1 year multiple entry visa.

You require a 1 year Health insurance policy to apply for the visa and for the first time entry. Second and subsequent entrys are only stamped in for the period remaining on your insurance.

There you go. The Danish Thai Embassy requirements

And are you willing to share with us which country this is?

And if applying for the O-A visa you will need to show a full one year policy which meets the requirements of the O-A visa...in other words...not able to only pay for months in Thailand...as you apparently trying to do .

If applying with an approved Thai insurance company it must be a one year policy.
