What are the rules and requirements for bringing pets to Thailand regardless of visa type?

Hi everyone šŸ‘‹,

I just joined the group, like many others, with the idea of moving to Thailand and starting a "*new life*." At the time, I looked into all the VISA options—even considered the ELITE one—but here's the problem.

The Elite Bronze doesn't allow you to bring a partner, at least not right now (I think it did before), and there's no guarantee that will change in the future. So I decided to go for the DTV (2). I’ve more or less got a clear idea of the documents they ask for, at least in my case, at the embassy in Madrid (Spain).

But I have one question I haven’t found solid info on, and I’m sure someone here can answer it better: no matter how you enter the country—Elite, DTV, etc.—are there any issues bringing pets?

I have a dog (about ā‰ˆ30kg) and a cat (ā‰ˆ2kg), and they’re family. They’re part of the package when it comes to moving to Thailand.

Have any of you run into problems? Do they make things difficult in that regard? šŸ™„

Thanks,

Cheers!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the user's concerns about moving to Thailand with pets while considering different visa options. They question whether bringing pets would pose any issues regardless of the visa type. Various community members respond, confirming that there are no visa requirements for pets, but they do need the proper documentation like vaccinations. However, challenges may arise due to housing restrictions on pets in condos and certain public spaces.

No issue whatsoever. Pet documents are completely separate from (human) immigration documents (e.g. visas). For pets you deal with the Veterinary Authority and customs.

I’ve brought in my cat twice, both times on a TR60 visa. When I passed immigration, they didn’t even notice my cat and I didn’t mention her. After passing through immigration you go to the veterinary office (located in the baggage claim area) to do the ’immigration’ process for your pets.

, thanks a lot! I didn’t know that about the veterinary office. Really appreciate you explaining your experience so thoroughly. ā˜ŗļø

It doesn't matter what visa you have when you bring a pet into Thailand, I've done it on a visa exempt stamp (I.e. technically no visa, just coming in as a tourist).

i’m sure there are thousands of cases out there, but I really appreciate your comment—it gives me hope that if you do things right and have the proper paperwork, they don’t put obstacles in the way. Seems like people love to highlight the bad stuff, and then when you try to find accurate and real info, it gets tricky. 😊

Your pets don't require a visa šŸ˜… They do require a typical package of documents for an international travel (+ all the vaccinations done in time).

The only problem with pets here is that many condos and businesses aren't pet-friendly. Even parks in Bangkok are not pet-friendly (there are a few pet zones bu they are relatively small). With two pets, you might need to look into renting a house instead of a condo.

Good luck! 🐱🐶

, thank you very much for your reply.

My idea—good or bad, I don’t know yet—is to move to the Pattaya or Rayong area, though I haven’t decided for sure. The reason is exactly what you mentioned: I’ve heard that pets aren’t very welcome in condos, so I’d rather go for a beach area with the intention of renting a villa—just enough so they can be outside and enjoy at least a small garden.

I know that you can find condos in good condition for around 15,000ąøæ, but of course, if the chances of finding one that allows pets are low, then I’ll have to go for a house, like you said. I imagine the prices would be around 40,000ąøæ.

Thanks a lot!! 😊

Anonymous participant I think you can find houses much cheaper than that outside of Pattaya. Look at places like Bang Saray and Rayong. You might get a pleasant surprise at arounf 20k :-)

, thanks for your input! Rayong is actually already kind of on my radar, but I hadn’t heard of Bang Saray—just added it to the list to check it out. šŸ™ƒ

Anonymous participant Best to try each place for a month or so before committing. If you need access to airport from International travel then Rayong etc is 90 mins to 2 hours. Hua Hin is lovely too but airport access not so convenient.

yeah, the whole thing about transport and being more or less close to a more ā€œurbanā€ area (or a capital city, however you want to call it) is definitely an important point. 🧐

Especially when it comes to paperwork, or in my case, vets, hospitals... those are things you have to factor in besides just the price. You might save money in one place, but by the end of the month or year, after all the trips, you’ve probably ended up spending more. You have to look at the full picture.

Thanks for your comment! šŸ˜€

Anonymous participant It looks quote nice there. It was a place I was considering if getting house down there. Pal had a 2 bedroom bungalow for less than 20k I think it was. No pool etc

Anonymous participant good plan 😊 don't disregard Hua Hin either if the beach and the prices are important 😊 Good luck! 🌟

, i didn’t know about Hua Hin, so I’m going to check it out. I’ve only been looking into all this for 2 or 3 weeks, and if it weren’t for people like you, who are already there or know the area well, it’d be hard to find good info online.

Thanks a lot! šŸ˜
