What are the regulations and experiences regarding bringing prohibited dog breeds into Thailand?

Hello. This isn't quite about VISA advice but for people that have travelled into Thailand with their dog. I keep reading that Pit bull Terriers, Staffordshire terriers and even Dobermans are prohibited. The information is a bit all over the place as some claim that Thai Govt has a longer list of dangerous breeds than those mentioned. One even mentioned that there is a possibility of a special permit. My girl is a Cane Corso x Rottweiler. đŸ„ș

Any advice?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion explores the challenges and experiences of bringing dogs, particularly breeds classified as 'dangerous', into Thailand. Concerns include the risk of certain breeds being prohibited by Thai authorities and airlines, as well as personal accounts of pet relocation experiences. The conversation stresses checking airline policies, connecting with pet relocation services, and obtaining necessary health certifications. It highlights a general fear towards large or bully breeds among the Thai population, influencing housing options and interactions.

We have a Doberman which we bought from a Doberman breeder in Bangkok so that parts a load of rubbish.

yep. I think the issue really just lies with the airline carriers more than local laws.
Chrisna **********
Just say a similar breed, mixed breed or something..
Martin *********
Yes, leave it at home.
Michael *******
Pit Bull breeds that include American Pit Bull Terrier, American Bully, American Bulldog and Staffordshire Bull Terrier

May Texan friend had his Doberman shipped here when he retired from Saudi Arabia and when she died few years later he got another from a Breeder from Chang Mai way so there is no problem with that breed.
Christine *******
You should be aware that many Thai people are afraid of big dogs, and the "bully breeds" especially. I have reason to believe that my German Shepherd was poisoned by my neighbors, and I live in an upscale housing estate, not in a rural village.
Mike *****
Leave your dog at home, sheesh!

@Mike ****
unhelpful, unnecessary and rude. This is a discussion about pet relocation. If you can't contribute positively then don't comment at all

you don’t make the rules

and neither do you. Reread my comments.

agreed some sense finally

Ill also keep my mouth shut regarding your comment - I made sense Alfred, just that I really don't care what anyone does so I should mind my own business and let others deal with the situations they create for themselves. Anyway the very best to all.

You will have to fly into Bangkok and drive to wherever like I did.

Get the paperwork from your vet with health certificates Etc and you need to apply for an import license for your dog you should be fine don't listen to these naysayers.

thanks. Yea it looks like there's no issues with local laws. Just airline carriers. I'll look into transporting my girl from BKK to north.
Alfred ***********
And may I just add dogs aren't dangerous it's the irresponsible owners. Maybe specifically bred dogs that are genetically bred or interbred for aggressive tendencies. But all dogs given care, attention, training etc and especially love are not dangerous at all.
Steve *******
you are correct -

Hi, yes I am aware. I've had 3 rottys in my life and in my opinion their representation is undeserved. Rottys were bred to protect farms, stock and families but their original function was to take the farm produce to market. Hence their needed size as horses were too expensive for your normal farmer. Mine have all been house dogs and great with children too. I do own a farm. But that's so they have room to run and play. I am unfamiliar with the Corso, however.

@Steve ******
like I said I can only express my opinion on my dogs. Other breeds that I don't know I cannot express an opinion on. And the original question was regarding a pet relocation not as a discussion forum on dangerous dogs.

Thanks for all the helpful input. I managed to narrow it down to it not being an issue with the import permit but with most Thai air carriers that do not allow these breeds. Here is one for example. Thai Airways is similar.

You can't get a condo that will accept her coz she's too big. So you will need a house or mooban with a large garden.
Dianne *****
@Jennifer *****
there have also been reports of Thai house owners refusing to allow potential tenants with pitbulls and other big dogs generally considered frightening / aggressive. So getting a rental proerty might prove more difficult
Jennifer ******
@Dianne ****
yes or if they are neighbours, they may report or poison the dog.
Christine *******
@Jennifer *****
Yes, I'm pretty certain that my German Shepherd was poisoned by my neighbors. She was a sweet, friendly dog, too; not aggressive at all.

I have a rottweiler called Sophie. I travelled to Ireland with her for a few months and then sent her back from Ireland to Thailand. Zero problems. I'd suggest contacting your pet relocation expert. If you don't have one I can recommend a great Worldwide one based in Dublin and of course my local guys here here in thailand. But lots of docs health certs, rabies certs etc. But they knew all the requirements and she was extremely well taken care of. Be aware some airlines won't or can't take live animals. Really depends on size of aircraft and route. Hope this helps
Alma ***************
CHeck with the airlines..

seems like the issue is with the airlines.

My best advice would be find an agent that does this kind of thing daily.

We used jets4pets but I know there are many more out there.

Part of our battle was that our girl is flat nosed (by breed standard and being full pedigree was treated as such)
Kesara *****

@Paul ************
yea it looks like it boils down to the Thai airlines' weird list of dogs supposedly picked for brachycephalism but also includes all mastiff breeds.
Giorgio ******
@Paul ************
your girl is flat nose ?? 55⁔5.

to call a dog or any animal his girl or his boy is the beginnimg of the problem . on the opposite why not call your children " my dog " .
Giorgio ******
@Paul ************
to thunk that animals are family , call them my girl .sleep with them and more . is a growing psychiatrik situation .in today's society .

Vets are working on cases , they say men are harder to cure than animals ..
Paul *************
@Giorgio *****
assume what you please she is family to us and we never would have left her behind. Mock and joke all you please, says a lot about your character!

@Paul ************
I call my dog, my boy. And he is like my child, sleeps at the bottom of the bed. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Cathryn *****************
We bought our Staffordshire bull terrier x with us from Australia, no issues.

Can we get a pic? Sounds like a beautiful dog.

the two brats
Rei ***********
@Kesara ****
easy. Don't put the breed . Just put Labrador mix. Welcome
Jason *******
@Rei **********
I agree. Nobody would question that, and there is absolutely no reason in the world to say there, anything other than labradors.
Jet ********
Sorry my friend you’ll never get her into that country and you don’t want to anyway she will be destroyed. If you try she is absolutely on the dangerous animals list they simply won’t permit it.
Galenus ******
@Jet *******
someone will poison her.🙏
Jet ********
@Galenus *****
if you’re serious about moving there I suggest you find her a really good home in America
Michael *******
I have friends (German/Thai ) with two Rottweilers, and there is a Doberman down the road from me so unless they are openly illegal probably not on banned list - a good Vet will be able to tell you.
Kesara *****

@Jet *******
I can't seem to find this list anywhere though.
