I plan to get an METV. I will get a 30 day extension after the first 60 days. Since we are supposed to show proof of a departure ticket, should it be booked using 60 or 90 days? How often do they actually check proof of departure plans?
Answer summary
When applying for a Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa (METV) to Thailand, it's recommended to book a departure ticket for 60 days as the initial entry period is valid for 60 days. While immigration may not check tickets at the point of immigration, airlines typically require proof of onward travel before boarding. It's essential to demonstrate a genuine need for multiple entries, which can be shown through planned departures within the visa's validity. If over 50, consider alternatives like a non-O visa which may not require proof of a return flight.

If you are over 50 why don't you get a non O 90 day visa in your own country ,no need for a return flight cheaper and easier,or get a 60 day tourist visa and a 30 day extension but this will cost more
book a 60 day flight out. its multiple entry so you can return and get another 60 days. its a 6 month tourist visa . but good only for 60 days each stay. if you time it right you can get a 30 extension.
For a METV application, it is usually the embassy or consulate processing the application that will be most concerned with onward travel and whether you can demonstrate a genuine need for multiple entries by showing at least two planned departures during the validity period.
Whether those tickets fall after 60 or 90 days is generally not the key issue. However, immigration may ask to see proof of onward travel on a later entry if they feel you are stretching the use of the METV over an extended period.
I will be applying for an METV this fall . My desire is to start my holiday in Thailand , and then fly to SGN for three(3) weeks . After my stay in Vietnam, I want to return to BKK . Is that a sufficient ‘need’ to have the METV ? Thank you JKN 👍
Normally immigration will only check if they are looking to deny you entry but in that case it should be 60 days as the extension isn't guaranteed. Might also be worth checking with your airline
