Had an odd one come in today that I thought I’d share.
Guy came in to do an extension of his tourist visa, but also had a child in a local international school, but his wife was listed as the guardian, not him. I thought it was kind of strange b/c of marriage and joint responsibilities and such, you know? I wondered why he wasn’t linked to the guardian Non-Imm O his wife had.
Come to find out, with one child in school, you can only have one guardian assigned. That guardian, however, can have dependents. To do this, though, it MUST be set up OUTSIDE the country. Simply supply the requisite details when you apply for the guardian visa at your chosen Thai Embassy or Consulate. Again, It can’t be done in-country.
The guy in this example didn’t do this for whatever reason, so wasn’t listed as a dependent so he is in the country on a tourist stamp. He can, however, apply during the next renewal or he can take a special trip with his wife (original visa owner) outside the country to get his dependent NON-IMM O as a dependent.
Anyway, thought I’d pass that along as we all wait for news of next steps from Big Immigration about what happens after 30 April.
TLDR : Answer Summary
A situation was shared where a man attempted to extend his tourist visa while his wife held a guardian Non-Immigrant O visa for their child in an international school. It was clarified that only one guardian can be assigned to a child, and to be designated as a dependent on the guardian's visa, he would need to apply outside of Thailand at a Thai Embassy or Consulate. His failure to do so meant he remained on his tourist visa, but he could apply for the dependent visa during the next visa renewal or travel abroad with his wife to obtain it.
