What are the reporting requirements for a Non-O visa holder in Thailand, and do I need a certificate of residence to open a bank account?

Hi All-I have a couple of questions that I am hoping I can get some help on. I entered Thailand this week on a Non-O 90 day visa with the intention to extend by marriage. First question, I was told that I need to report to local immigration office upon arrival at my new residence (Ubon Ratchathani). I went to the local immigration office and they had no idea that I need to do this. I called the main immigration office in Bangkok and was told only need to report 60 days into my 90 days. Any idea what is correct or if I need to report at all?

Second question, I need to set up a bank account for the THB400,000 but the bank told me I need a certificate of residence from immigration to do so. I called immigration office and told me I can only get that from my American embassy. Is this true and does anyone have any experience with this? Anxious to get the bank account set up as needs to be in 60 days before I apply for marriage extension.

Any help would be much appreciated!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks clarification on whether they need to report to local immigration upon arrival on a Non-O 90-day visa, as they received conflicting information about the reporting timeline. Additionally, they inquire about the necessity of a certificate of residence for opening a bank account to meet financial requirements for a marriage extension. Comments indicate that reporting only needs to occur at the 60-day mark, and obtaining a bank account may be possible with just a passport, though some banks may request additional documents.

Thanks everyone! Sounds like my next step is to try a few more banks and if that does not work, will go to Americann embassy.

Try the SCB at the Big C in Ubon. I went in to change some money and they were begging me to open an account. So I did, with just my passport.

I was in a similar situation with the Bank. I tried SCB and they said they had to call HO and would get back to me. Went down the street to KBank and 20 minutes later I had a new bank account :D All they wanted was my passport.

Scb bangkok bank Thai military bank only need your passport a a kasikhon and one other wont to see work permit I guess those two just won't to be a pain

I'd try a few banks before you make the slog down to Bangkok to get the proof of residency. I think you might find one that'll play ball and let you open an account without it

Sir, Kasikorn Bank in Sukhumvit soi 1, behind Bumrungrad Hospital and Fortune Town 1st floor Rama 9 branch doesnt require the letter of residency to open a new account. Just only passport, marriage cert, wifes ID thats it

Here's the website to make an appointment to get a notary letter from the US consulate in Bangkok.

Here's the standard affidavit you can fill out (but DON'T sign it) so you can prove residency.

The good news is, IF you are already married you can also get a 60 day (visit family) extension on that 90 day Non-O stamp you entered on if you run outta time. After that you can apply for the yearly extension of stay

You don't need anything other than your passport in some banks. Where are you as I may be able to help you with a branch

Just walk a into as many banks as you can and tell them you've got 400k to deposit in a new account. They should jump at it.

Nachaluai, about two hours south of Ubon Ratchathani. Closest Bangkok Bank is Det Udom.

Kenneth Fly...for the bank, make an appointment with the US embassy for Notary Service. When you arrive you can tell the agent you need to open a bank account. You be given a form in which you write your address in Thailand and state the purpose is to open a bank account. The document they return to you is what the bank wants. It will cost you $50.

I will also add, if you haven't done it already, while you are there get the affadavit of freedom to marry and the statement of income that are needed for your marriage and extension of stay based on marriage.

Your visa is for 90 days but at the 60day mark you will apply for an extension of stay. There is a 30day consideration period before you actually get the 1year extension stamp. When you get that stamp consider getting a multiple entry permit also.

Best of luck to you!

You can open a bank account With your marriage certificate and proof of residence no problem you can actually open an account with a 12 month visa

Most banks are sticking to the proof of residence letter from either your consulate or the immigration office, although some will take a lease agreement.

It's really a crap shoot on what they want.

If one branch denies you just go down the street to another branch, you'll find one eventually ;)

True Tod. But when I handed the guy my passport he mumbled something like "hmm... denmark..." and looked at me rather oddly until I handed my letter of reference and he cheered right up.

Even better I had to have 12 month but I'm going back a few years 👍

you can open a bank account on a 30 day visa exempt stamp or a tourist visa too ;)

2. I got a "letter of reference" from my embassy. The (Bankgkok bank) guy lit up like a christmas tree when I presented that.

Some embassies will maybe just give you a copy of your passport and stamp it. Should work equally well.
