Hi everyone,

I am a currently in Thailand on a Non-ED visa sponsored by an internship program.

I plan to travel to go out of the country for one week (June 21–27) and then return to Thailand for a few days before flying back to the U.S. My internship company informed me that because I will be stopping my internship earlier than expected, they may need to notify the relevant authorities or embassy. This made me concerned that my Non-ED status could be affected while I am abroad.

I am trying to understand what my best option is. If I obtain a re-entry permit before leaving Thailand, will I still be able to return under my current Non-ED visa even if my internship has ended or been reported as terminated? Or would I need to apply for a tourist visa/e-Visa before returning to Thailand?

Has anyone been in a similar situation with a Non-ED visa tied to an internship or educational program? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Answer summary
The user is on a Non-ED visa in Thailand, sponsored by an internship program, and is planning to leave the country for a week. They are concerned about the implications of their internship ending and whether they can return to Thailand under their current visa after obtaining a re-entry permit. Community members advise that if the user has a valid Non-ED visa and can obtain a re-entry permit, they should be allowed to return, provided their visa remains unreported as invalid by the internship program. Key points discussed include the verification of visa status, the need to secure a re-entry permit before leaving, and possible concerns from immigration upon their return.

Be prepared that immigration upon your return from America may question why you left when you were supposed to be studying interning what have you. Also check your entry stamp upon return to make sure it coincides with the end date of your current permission to stay stamp.

do you think this is an issue if I tell them I was just travelling and stopped the internship for that duration

only the immigration officer you will stand in front of can answer that question but as you would be able to show your booked flight tickets out of Thailand and back to the US in a few days (and before your visa ends) I'd say you should be OK as long as you have the re-entry permit

Are you indeed on a Non-ED visa or an Extension of Stay?

Graham Seal I’m on a non-ED visa I never did an extension. I applied for a non-ED e visa and got it online

Are you on an actual visa or are you on an extension of stay, check your passport. If you are on a visa it can't be cancelled and IF you can get a re-entry permit you can return while the visa remains valid. But if you are on an extension of stay it should be cancelled the day you stop your internship, it's really something you should do yourself as you would have signed a paper at immigration promising to do so.

So even if my internship informs the authorities that I’m stopping this week that wouldn’t terminate my visa status?

then as long as you can get a re-entry permit and immigration allows you to re-enter you'll be fine

Permission to stay based on a visa cannot be cancelled. So there's no reason for them to reject. It's only an extension that becomes invalid if the reason it was based on is not longer applicable.

IF (and only if!) he can get a re-entry permit on Immigration, he can return for the remainder of the initial 90-days stay permit.

But since he said that the internship will be terminated before the 90-days stay permit expires, then Immigration must be notified about that. And this will - most probably - void his chance to buy a re-entry permit. Or can you buy a re-entry permit for a remaining stay permit when the reason it was issued for, already got terminated?

it's certainly possible.

all you can do is go and ask your local immigration office if they will issue one, I wouldn't wait and see if they will issue one at the airport when your catching a flight
