Will I face problems re-entering Thailand with a passport under processing and a valid visa?

I went out of Thailand to make a passport and at work I was given just a week leave. So now my new passport isn't out yet, and my flight is due for tomorrow.

So my concern is if I get back to Thailand with my visa still valid for over a month and my passport for 6 months, will I have any problems with the immigration at the airport? I got a re- entry permit before exiting Thailand.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about re-entering Thailand with a valid visa while their passport is under renewal. They have a re-entry permit and a passport that has been applied for but not yet received. Many comments suggest that once a new passport application is made, the old passport is typically rendered invalid for travel, thus causing potential issues at immigration.

It's also not easy for UK non business travellers to get a second passport. What I cannot seem to find is how long the second passport is valid for. Wether it's a fresh 10 years or only valid for the same time as number 1 passport. Either way, unless your working and can prove the need, you'll likely not get one.

I know with 100% certainty that a brit passport is canceled the minute you apply for a new one because it says so here.

As a German it is this way....u apply for a new one witch needs about 2 weeks .it comes from Germany to the consulate here on phuket. Till you not get it in your hands, the old one is the only one , as they give it to me, the old one is canceled and I go a letter from them that I got a new one.

In between I could travel and in and out of thailand as much as I want.

What I did without any problems.

Rob Huff I think some people maybe getting confused with keeping it but not being able to travel on it. 😊

in the past with US passports, when you applied for the new passport the old one was cancelled. I wasn't aware of the outreach service that allows you to keep your current travel privileges. But that's new from 3 years ago when I got my new book in the US. They were actually very clear at the passport office that even if I found my lost/stolen passport, as soon as I left the window the current book was not longer valid.

My other old passports were all returned with my new one, with two holes punched in it. I've also seen the cut corners from others on the group here.

What I've never heard of is someone applying for a new passport and having the old one remain valid unless it was granted a special permission (one for Israel, one for Arab countries).

David Edwin we are not talking holding 2 passports. UK citizens can hold 2 passports. It's to do with requesting a replacement of a previous passport that is about to expire. I know your American and not the sharpest knife in the draw but please try to keep up.

@Ron ******
without turning this into an unfriendly argument, like on Thai Visa, the USA does indeed let you travel after you have ordered a new passport. Tod Daniels, resident visa guru and admin of this group, even acknowledged that earlier in this post.

Perhaps your country does not but USA even allows ordinary citizens to hold two USA passports at the same time so they can travel to Israel and other Middle East countries. So End Of.

@David ******
I have no idea what your talking about regarding lost or stolen passports? Once you've applied for a replacement passport, you cannot travel. End of.
Rob ******
Don't think that applies to or man Harris, but good to know! Was a real huge issue back in the early 2000s for my mother who worked in both Saudi and Israel. She has about 40 booklets because each trip she had to get a new passport...

It's also my experience in the more distant past that passports are invalidated upon applying for a new one unless an exemption is given.

Not my direct experience, but my mom was disallowed from holding two valid US passports at the same time and she had valid reasons to do so. At the time she was married to a high level us government official based overseas and also had very legitimate uses for both passports.

I don't think it's common. Maybe I've just had several exceptional experiences thorough my lifetime...

There is a VERY BIG difference that you just put in your post. You said your passport was lost or stolen. So of course, because of terrorism security concerns, your passport was immediately cancelled.

You can always buy a new US passport without it being lost or stolen, does not matter the age. No need to damage it by washing it either. You do not even have to provide a reason. Just pay the money and new passport.

So Ron Angel no confusion at all.

Tod I was always under the impression that like the UK, the US allowed you to keep the old passport but you couldn't travel on it. Then, again the same as the UK, once you had the new one, the old one was completely cancelled? The UK puts a notice somehow on the system once they receive the application to stop you travelling on the old passport. It's then snipped on the corners once you have the new one.

I think it's going to come down to the O/P getting a hold of his consulate where ever he is now and asking them IF he can still travel back to thailand on his current passport after ordering a new one.

Only they can let him know if his current one is good for travel or not.

The less that 6 months less on your passport wouldn't have stopped you from entering the country because you have a valid visa or extension.

BUT as everyone pointed out once you apply for new passport the old one can't be used for international travel anymore.
Tod *********
@Da***
, I am aware of that but many countries don't do that.

For example the brit consulate states that once you apply for a new passport your old one can no longer be used for international travel.

Tod the US Embassy in Bangkok does outreach in cities around Thailand. You can apply for your new passport and keep your old one. They do not cancel it yet. You can then go to Bangkok to get it or they will bring it to you on the next Outreach visit. You show them the old passport and they cancel it then and give you the new passport. If you do not collect the new passport they will subsequently cancel the new passport.

I'm interested where you went to get a new passport because your profile gives you living in Rayong
Tod *********
and what was the reason you left the country to get a new passport? Doesn't your country have a consulate here?

Yes

It is being processed now

I was thinking I could return to Thailand and the passport can be sent later by DHL

I dont know what country you are from but when you apply for a new passport most countries invalidate your existing passport for travel. Wait for the new passport and keep the old one with visa and re entry permit, you'll be stamped in on the new passport
Ron *******
As soon as you apply for a new passport, your current passport isn't valid for travel.
Ananda ****
Yes I have done that too and travelled between applying and receiving the new passport. It is valid until you receive your new one
Luke ******
Maybe it's different in other countries. When i changed mine they asked me if i want it cancelled then or when i pick up the new passport and i chose the latter.
Rob ******
Well, if your new passport has already been processed your current passport will no longer be valid and you won't be allowed anywhere...

Best advice is to wait for the new passport. You technically don't have a valid passport so your work will just have to understand.
Johnsuma ******
do not worry your passport & visa is valid untill you get a new one.

except if your pp provider mention a new pp requested.

in fact i think airline will not let you in.
