TLDR : Answer Summary
A holder of a 12-month AO Retirement visa in Thailand can consider a few options for renewal. Currently, this visa cannot be renewed directly. Instead, you can perform a border run before the visa's expiration date, allowing you to enter Thailand again and receive an additional year of stay. Alternatively, you can travel back to your home country, Australia, and apply for a new Non-Immigrant O-A (Long Stay) visa. If you prefer to remain in Thailand, you may apply for an extension of stay based on retirement, which will require you to meet specific financial requirements either through banked funds or monthly income transfers.

I would say the EASIEST thing would be to slog back to Australia every two years (the amount of time you can get out of that O-A visa if you work it correctly) and get a NEW year-long, multi-entry Non-O-A visa.

That way you don't have to fool with banking the money here, or international transfers or anything. You just go get another O-A visa like you did the first time.

I know people who are on their 5th or 6th one (meaning they're here for 10-12 years now on them.

Getting a 1 year extension is easy. However you now want to prepare to meet the financial requirements. You have to decide whether you are going to use banked money or monthly income transfers.

You can not renew the visa. Or you can go back to Australia for a NEW Non Immigrant O-A (Long Stay) Visa. As long as you leave and enter Thailand before the Enter Before or Valid Until date on the visa you get 1 year of stay on arrival. Take a look it seems to me you can still use this visa and get the most time out of it before you have to think for new visa or an Extension of Stay based on being over 50 years of age.

As you probably know you can basically get a second year by doing a border run just prior to the enter before date on the visa. After that point you have a couple of options. You could go back to your home country and apply for a new non imm o-a multi entry visa, or you can apply for an extension of stay based on retirement here in Thailand.
