Hi , I obtained a Non Immigrant OA Visa in Australia prior to arriving in Thailand with the intention of retiring here . Visa was issued on 3 Aug 2017 & I arrived on 14 Sept . I have been told if I leave Thailand & re-enter before the 2nd Aug I will be stamped in for an additional year . Others have told me I'm better off going for a 12 month extension before the 13th Sept . I'm just hoping to find the easiest way of extending my time here without additional paperwork & immigration issues . Eventually I plan on gaining a " retirement visa " within Thailand which I've been told can be extended yearly . Any help or advise will be greatly appreciated . PS . I am living in Phuket / Chalong & dealing with Phuket Town Immigration .

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking the easiest way to extend their Non Immigrant OA Visa in Thailand without facing additional paperwork or immigration issues. They were advised about two options: performing a border run before August 2, 2018, which would grant them an additional year, or applying for a 12-month extension before September 13, 2018. Various comments highlighted the border run as a hassle-free option, while others noted the importance of meeting financial requirements for extensions.

I'm an Aussie that had an O-A too. Just do the border bounce. You'll get a free year with no hassles. Don't forget you need a re-entry permit if you leave during the second year.

Chris Parish CORRECT, the multiple entry portion of the visa expires when the visa itself expires (the enter before date) and if you want to keep any stamp in your passport 'alive' when you exit the country after that date you need a re-entry permit or it will cancel when you stamp out

So does that mean it's not a multi entry in the second year? My husband and I are new to this, just got our O-A in Sydney and will arrive in Thailand on 23rd

Yep, just cross the border end of the month, come back and get another year.

Thanks again , greatly appreciated . I think a quick trip / holiday to Penang at the end of this month will be my best & stress free option .

Yes, but you need to meet the requirements, like 800.000 Thb in Thai bank account 2 months prior the application date, or the 65.000 Thb a month income certified by your Embassy.

Would that be a 12 month extension ?

If you do not plan on doing border runs or visit other countries you can apply for the Extension of Stay 30 days before your Admitted to Stay date.

Extension of Stay on Non O visa is for 1 year.

Robert, and that gives you another year?

Thanks Robert , That's what I've been told , if I don't leave can I still do an extension prior to 13 Sept ?

This option is only available to holders of the O-A Multi-Entry Visa

Instead of filing an Extension of Stay for one year at 1900 baht - you can get that extra year by simply doing a Border Run (no extensive long range exit and reentry needed). Just before your First Year Expiry date - depending on where you are take a van , bus, train or plane to Laos, Myanmar (Burma), Cambodia, Malaysia. You only have to step over the border - stamp out - stamp in - repeat. See a bit of Thailand

The Visa is a multiple Entry visa and has the enter before date of 2 Aug 2018. If you enter before or on that date you get a 1 year of Admitted to Stay. So if you plan correctly you can stay till near 1 Aug 2019. Be aware if you travel in out Thailand after 2 Aug 2018 you need a re-entry permit.
