TLDR : Answer Summary
To renew your Non Immigrant O-A visa, you have two options: you can extend your current visa in Thailand, provided you meet certain requirements, or you can leave the country and re-enter just before the expiration date to receive an additional year. Extensions require meeting financial criteria, such as having 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account and maintaining the required health insurance. It's important to note that while you can extend your current O-A visa in-country, you cannot apply for a new O-A visa while in Thailand.

I did a round trip to Singapore near to end of my visa’s first year to get that additional year . Way easier than doing the regular renewals . But at first the immigration officers at the airport would not stamp it for another year so I had to insist they contact a superior. Then I just had to show them my insurance. Since then I have been in and out of Thailand and no problems with that additional year expiration.

One thing to be aware of. You can extend your current OA visa inside Thailand, but you can not apply for a new one inside Thailand. You can only get a type O retirement visa extension in country.

If you leave and re-enter Thailand just before the expiration date of the visa, you can get another full year (as long as you have a full year of the required insurance). Most people with an OA do this to get 2 years out of it, then return to their home country to apply for a new one.

If you want to get an extension in Thailand, you'll need to meet all the requirements of the non-O extension, like having 800,000 baht in a Thai bank, but you'll also have the same insurance requirements of the non-OA.
