Next month I am going to Nong Khai to cross the border in to Vientiane to submit my ED visa paperwork at the Thai Embassy in Vientiane (I know it's a 2 day process). Does anyone know what time the border opens.... from what I have read it appears you can cross the border between 6-8 am and pay an extra USD1 for crossing the border outside standard business hours - is that correct?
Answer summary
The Nong Khai border crossing opens at 6 AM and is reportedly open until about 10 PM. Travelers can cross the border to Vientiane in order to submit their ED visa paperwork at the Thai Embassy, and there is no option to pay an additional fee for early crossing, contrary to popular belief.

What is the rush to cross the border right when it opens?
The border opens at 6AM and I believe it's open until about 10PM now.
There is no problem getting from Nong Khai to the thai consulate in Vientiane in time to turn in your paperwork. All you'd end up doing is queuing up at the consulate to wait for it to open anyway.
Last time I crossed the border (I guess it was after 8:30 am) I spent most of the morning waiting to submit my paperwork at the Thai Consulate....I'm just trying to get there a bit earlier to try and reduce the time spent waiting at the Thai Consulate, although I don't think I'll cross the border at 6 am, maybe 7 am or 7:30 am?
