TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a Thai marriage visa, evidence such as your marriage certificate, partner's details, bank statements, and proof of pension payments must be submitted at the time of the visa application at the embassy. After entering Thailand, you will need to apply for a visa extension at the immigration office, which is treated as a new application and may have different requirements depending on the specific office. It's critical to ensure that 400,000 baht is deposited in your Thai bank account for at least two months prior to applying for the extension, along with any other requirements set by your immigration office.

The online Visa that Brandon explained lasts for 90 days once you are in Thailand. Therefore you have about 3 weeks to open your Thai bank account and deposit the 400,000 baht, so that you can apply for the extension of stay before your visa expires. Good luck.

as your British embassy does not certify your income, there is no way around the requirement to transfer a minimum of 400,000 THB into your Thai bank account as soon as you have entered Thailand on a 90-days Non-Imm-O Family Visa, and the money needs to have been sitting in the account for a minimum of 2 months on the day you apply for the "1-year stay permit extension"

If the OP needs more time to season his funds he can also apply for the 60 days visiting Thai dependants extention, giving him a total of 150 days.

the funds of 400,000 have to be in a Thai bank account in your name only and not in your wifes. When apply for the 90 day non-o vise you can use your uk bank account as proof of funds, also they may ask for a letter of invitation from your wife (family) so it maybe a good reason to get the wife to write a letter inviting you to come and stay then take a photo for your visa requirements

Everything is checked every time. They are all BRAND NEW applications.

First you apply for the visa from the embassy, and meet whatever requirements they have. Each embassy sets their own requirements so you need to see what your embassy wants.

Then when you arrive in Thailand, you will be applying for the extension from immigration. This is a brand new application, and will require everything that your immigration office requires. Each immigration office sets their own requirements so you should go to your immigration office ahead of time and ask them for the handout of requirements for a marriage extension. If using 400,000 baht, the money will need to be in a Thai bank account in your name only at this point, and must have been in the account for 2 months already at the time you apply.
