What are the options for extending a Digital Nomad Visa in Thailand when facing a bank statement issue?

Hi Guys. Sharing updates about the rules for DTV extension for your info with some questions to consider together.

Context: I got my DTV – Digital Nomad in Oct 2024, live in Bkk and am in the processing of extending it for the first time. I meet all requirements for the extension – $ in bank, work, everything.

The agent in Cheangwattana didn’t accept my application for extension because my bank statements don’t cover the current month. In case you don’t know, most banks around the world don’t provide bank statements for the current month. Statements are automated and are provided only for previous months.

I showed the officer my banking app, where they saw that I have the required funds. They confirmed that they understand that I have the funds and that the rest of my paperwork is fine too. However, they said that they can’t process the application because of this requirement.

Instead, they gave me the below options, which I’m sharing with the group, as I’m sure that others will be in the same position:

1/ Wait for 1st April, get the statement for March, and apply again. They said that if 1 day is missing from the statement, it wouldn’t be an issue. My current visa expires on 10th April but they said there would be enough time to process this.

2/ Leave Thailand anytime before 10th April, stay out of the country for a day, and come back. They said that if I do this, the immigration officer at the boarders will extend my visa for another 180 days without requiring any documentation and without any processing fees.

3/ I have an acquaintance at the Bkk immigration who said that I can pay 10k THB and get the extension without any paperwork but I don’t want to do this, especially since I meet all requirements.

Based on these options, I have some questions and would appreciate your advice:

-Timelines for extension at the immigration: The officer said that 10 days are more than enough but I see online that they advise to start the extension process several weeks before the current visa expires. What’s your personal experience?

-Extension via boarder run: The agent told me that this is the easiest way to extend – no questions asked by officials. When I asked about the success rate, they said it’ll work 100%. Can anyone who did this from the group confirm their experience and if they have any issues?

-Future extensions: My understanding is that DTV is a multiple entry Visa, however, we can only have 1 extension every 365 days. If I leave the country, come back, and extend for another 180 days, can I leave the country again within the same rolling year and come back? If I do so, will the visa be extended further or not?

-90-day reporting scenarios: Normally, we have to report twice every 6 months, so my reporting is due till 10th April. If I stay and extend at the Bkk immigration, I also have to do the 90-day reporting process. If I leave the country for a day for the visa extension, do I still have to do the 90-day reporting or not?

Could you please tell me if you applied for DTV by yourself or with the help of an agent?

Numerous accounts now about DTVers getting interviewed and questioned by immi upon re-entering from abroad. No shock, really, considering how much it's being abused.

you can extend every entry one time. so a maximum of 360 days in country. then you need to leave and restart the cycle. no requirements on entry.

90 day report restarts on entry. btw. of you extend early you need to go back to immigration for the 90d report. they wont do it early for you.

any normal bank lets you download bank transactions for x days. which will easily be accepted as a bank statement. i just downloaded my bank statements of previous ~50 days and used them. easy.

you cannot log into your online banking on a computer and then download your transaction history? that would be very strange, no? i mean you could even download/print the website…..

I can print the website but this doesn’t qualify as a formal doc. They’re looking for a statement, not website is what the immigration dude said. I even gave them my phone and they went through the apps showing the balance and transactions. Anyways, this is just for info if it helps anyone, since leaving the country resets things I’m good. Thanks for helping bro

usualy any bank has a button for exporting the transactions as a pdf… in my online banking i can set the amount of days i want to see. and then i can export as pdf. very easy and accepted. it sounds more like a user error.

"In case you don’t know, most banks around the world don’t provide bank statements for the current month. Statements are automated and are provided only for previous months."

What is meant here is go to the bank and get a current statement. The have some sort of special letter or notification.

What they don't mean is the bank statements that most banks around the world send every so often that are outdated by the time they are received.

log into online banking and export the last 1,2,3 whatever months of transactions as a pdf file… pretty standard procedure.

Most banks don't provide letters by request brother - only the paperwork they provide according to their standard process.

banks in Thailand have a standard process to issue both a statement from the day of request back (3, 6 or 12 months) plus a letter to the chief immigration officer verifying your a customer and you've maintained the qualifying funds. These are stamped by the bank and are the required documents by immigration to confirm funds held in a Thai bank where this is a prerequisite for an extension of stay. These cost a couple of hundred baht, and must not be more than 7 days old when presenting them at IM. So if you are using Thai funds to support your status rather than foreign funds, then its only to be expected that immigration will require the usual documentation they require for all other extensions.

It is very easy to just leave and return and get a fresh 180-day stamp. I have done 3x, no issues whatsoever.

Thanks, brother. Do they ask for any paperwork so that I'm prepared?
Andi ***********
@Andy **********
No, never asked for that. If you are on soft power, it would be good to have proof of ongoing activity. Soft power applicants have been asked to show paperwork that they are still taking classes/treatment.

I've got the digital nomad one

So you are well placed to just go in and out with no hassle. When i applied in person in Taipei, the Thai immigration officer who approved my DTV told me to just do border runs as it is so simple and no need for the paperwork.

I believe you have to show the money has been in your account for a full 30 days in Bangkok so if your next statement will show that you'll be good, assuming you also have the other documents. You should get the extension the same day you apply for it. You can only get ONE extension on each entry so you have to leave at the 360 day point, but you can return the next day and repeat the process.

Thanks, brother. Yeah, I maintain more than the required funds in the account permanently so this shouldn't be an issue - other paperwork is okay too. Let me check my understanding, you're saying that we can extend at the immigration once per entry but we can leave at any time, re-enter, and get 180 more days plus the right to extend one more time. Correct?

The DTV is a multiple entry visa. That means EVERY time you leave Thailand and return, you will get 180 day stamp. You can do this 365 days per year if you want, though your passport would fill up quite quickly. This is the route most people choose as it's the easiest and fastest. You're not renewing anything, you are getting a brand new entry stamp.

The amount of time it takes to process your extension is irrelevant. There are reports that immigration have been giving "under consideration" stamps in passports for DTV applicants. All this means is that you've been granted a temporary extension until the date on the stamp, and when you return on that date you will receipt the full extension stamp in your passport. They don't even hold onto your passport.

I would recommend waiting until the beginning of April, and trying again once you have the new bank statement. It sounds like you have everything else ready. You can apply for the extension up until the end of your current stamp, so the last day you can apply is April 10th. If they don't accept your application then, just do a border bounce. You don't even have to stay out of Thailand for 1 day. You just need to stamp out of Thailand, stamp into another country, and then you can immediately return.

Thanks, brother - very helpful. Couple of follow up questions. 1/ Back in 2024 when going through the DTV features, I remember it said that there can only be 1 extension per rolling year. Are you saying that we can work around this by doing a boarder run and get new 180-day stamps all the way during these 5 years? 2/ If I do the boarder run, I want to make sure there will be no issues that would prevent me from getting back to Thailand. Will they ask for any paperwork or not? 3/ If I do the boarder run, will I still have to do the 90-day reporting or not?
Brandon ************
@Andy **********
1) You can only get 1 extension per year because there are only 365 days in a year. Getting an extension means you spent 180 days in Thailand and want another 180 days. With that math it would be impossible for you to apply for 2 extensions in a year. If you don't want to bother with extensions, just leave and return. You get 180 days EVERY TIME you return. That's why your visa is called multiple entry. There is no limit.

2) No one has ever reported a problem returning with a DTV at this point. You just handover your passport and printed DTV visa.

3) 90 day reporting is mandatory regardless of what you do. Each 90 consecutive days in Thailand you must file a TM47. If you leave before 90 days then you haven't spent 90 consecutive days in Thailand.
