TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the recent changes in work permit regulations for foreigners in Thailand, specifically regarding 90-day reporting obligations. Some users express skepticism about the idea that foreigners can work freely without geographical restrictions, emphasizing the continued requirement for work permits and appropriate visas. Concerns are raised about potential misuse of these regulations, fearing a lack of control might lead to illegal employment scenarios, especially among certain demographics like Burmese and Cambodian workers. Overall, the sentiment is cautious, with many believing that the situation is more complex than presented and that enforcement will remain stringent.

Even now without this change in work permit rules some immigration offices will let you file a 90 day report if it's due and you're staying in their area even if you didn't get your extension from them, BUT some will not.

i believe it will be mostly for burmese, cambodien but for westerner and other it will be the same as now

Yeah, so pretty much what we were saying. I guess we should take Phuket News only just a little bit more seriously than The Samui Times?

I understand it that you still need the work permit but your location is not fixed, you can work in any regions you employer deems fit. IE you might be posted to a branch office and rotated between regions It is nt a free for all.

That list would put Thailand in conflict with its international obligations under various Trade Agreements. Architects, Engineers, Lawyers etc.

Darren Low i have read the list thst was on the empmoyment visa applcaation. Yoy still need a work permit and a visa. Does not apply yo yourist visas or retirement visas. I may be wrong but that is my understanding.

The restricted list is more to do with Military and security. As I read the press release it does not men it is a free for all. You still need a work permit and an appropriate visa.

90 day reports aside, i don't think its going to be long before we see the first reports of arrests etc due to people taking these press releases and assuming its a free for all to do what they like. Something is telling me, this isnt as simplistic as is being made out.

I totally agree. Getting my work permit was a right pain. No way are they gonna just let people work wherever. I couldn't even get my Visa without my tax card to show I was paying tax but that's all linked to my wp as well

Ron, 100% correct. Apparently it is really only supposed help the labour force of Burmese workers and their respective employers. It is not a blanket rule and as you said it will create issues for those who think it is

I would believe all this a lot more if I could find the information in Thai. I need to see that information in Thai before I fully believe what thephuketnews.com is saying. Right now, all we have to go on is a report in an online 'newspaper'.

Darren Low i would guess taking it literally, you would now simply get a wp as long as you get a b visa?
Ron *******
If theres no control, it will open up a 'Cash in hand' foreign jobs market with no registration of who's even working in any given place. That's one reason why i can't take these reports literally.

I'm already seeing teachers assume they can now take jobs serving in a bar in the evenings.

I just cannot see the Thais allowing foreign labor to be used in a whim with no control.

I'll put my hands up if I'm proved wrong but something doesn't seem right to me.
