What are the current rules for renewing the O multi marriage visa in Thailand, and is the long-term tourist visa a better option?

Hey everyone! I’m hoping to return sometime in November from Canada. I usually get a β€œO” multi marriage visa. Have they changed renewal for these? Is it possible to renew after 90 days at immigration or am I better to apply for the new proposed long term tourist visa? I typically stay for 6 months.

Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster inquires about renewing their O multi marriage visa upon returning to Thailand and whether it's feasible to do so at immigration, or if they should consider the proposed long-term tourist visa (STV). Comments provide clarification that after obtaining a 90-day O visa, the individual can apply for a one-year extension if they meet specific financial requirements. However, the effectiveness of the STV is still uncertain as it has not yet been officially implemented. Therefore, opting for the one-year extension remains the recommended course of action.

Try a repatriation flight but go through embassy

What airports can you transit through to get to Vancouver?

, Seattle, SanFransisco, or Los Angeles, with Seattle the most common, but Vancouver, Washington will be extremely hard to fly to commercially. Vancouver Canada is a different story, then Seattle is the best transfer point.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Things to ponder πŸ€”.

As Joe has said, the STV does not yet exist and may never see the light of day. If it ever does become law in its current concept form there would be 3 Charter flight per week with no more than 100 people each flying from somewhere in the world to BKK. I would assume that zero charters would be from Canada

I Canadian as well and surely never expect to get to Thailand via this method

This new visa is not remotely Official Yet. The Thai Cabinet only discussed it as an Idea. No official action by the Thai Govt. or Thai Immigration yet. No rules - No details available yet

After you get your type O 90 day visa, just like before, you can apply for a one year extension, if you meet the financial requirement of at least bt400,000 in a Thai bank account in your name only, or bt40k minimum coming into your Thai bank account from overseas every month for the last year. For you the bt400k option would be the easiest, if you have the money, and it doesn't matter where it comes from. It just has to be in your account for at least 2 months before you apply. There are a bunch of other documents that are not hard to get, as long as you can meet the financial requirement. Immigration will not extend your visa for another 90 days inside Thailand. They want you to get the correct one year extension after you get here, but, they have been allowing people to get a 60 day extension based on visiting family, but not sure if this might change after this month ends. It probably won't so five months instead of six, and I've heard one person that extended it twice this way, but can't confirm that. It is best to just get the one year extension.

some of us don’t want to lock πŸ”’ away that amount of funds. If I was staying for a year.... it would be sensible. Do you have more details about the 60 day extension and how many are allowed?
Kool *******
@Johnny ***********
, if you do not have that much money to leave in the bank for two months, which is hardly locking it away, then just say so. After the required two months you could withdraw it all, and close the account. Other than that check with immigration about the extension for visiting family.

@Kool ******
I was led to believe you had to leave it in the account for the entire time you lived in Thailand and that it could NOT drop below 400k baht.

, not the case for marriage extensions. You are confusing it with retirement visa extension. For retirement it is bt800,000, for five months total, then bt400,000 must stay in the bank always, but marriage visa extension does NOT have that requirement, only the the bt400,000 be in the bank for two months before your first extension, then the next year for three months. That is all, after you get your extension you can spent it however you want.

There's a lot of hoops to jump through for the STV there making it harder everyday ,check with the Embassy there and see if you can come
