What are the chances of my Thai girlfriend getting a B1 tourist visa for the US while traveling with me?

ORIGINAL POSTER
Hi, I’m flying to the US from Thailand and want to bring my Thai gf and she’s preparing for the tourist B1 visa. Wanted to hear of any others’ experiences with the visa interview as I’ve heard they’re extremely strict.

We’d be visiting for just 2 weeks.

Some questions:

Is it generally a good or bad look if she’s paying for herself and that she’s traveling with me? Or do they think Thais traveling with boyfriend is risky?

We’re gonna visit and stay at my sisters place in USA. Is having a US connection stronger or weaker?

Any particular red flags they’re looking out for?

Thanks in advance. I’ve heard Thai people get rejected very often so hoping for some advice.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the difficulty faced by a Thai woman applying for a B1 tourist visa to the US while planning to travel with her American boyfriend. Many comments express skepticism about the likelihood of approval, citing concerns about red flags during the visa interview, particularly regarding her financial independence, evidence of ties to Thailand, and the perception of traveling with a foreign partner. Several responders share personal experiences, suggesting that strong ties to Thailand (like property ownership or stable employment) are essential for approval. There is also a consensus that traveling with a partner may pose additional scrutiny, and alternative travel destinations, such as Japan, are recommended.

Just be prepared to go to Bangkok, spend your time, your money, and have someone tell you no after treating you like ahit for 2 minutes. It's a horrible experience and the people who work there are rude a-holes. They made snide remarks about my wife being pregnant before we were married. Imagine paying $800 to go to the dmv and have them make fun of you. It is an infuriating experience honestly. You will have better luck dressing her up as a Somali and opening a daycare.

Extremely difficult and you will likely be rejected. As others have mentioned, choose an alternate country and have a great holiday.

What is wrong with you? My girl try to do that shit with me and I told her hell to the eff no. Do you know how dangerous it is for her? I'm not even going to mention the amount of racism she will face when they hear her English. Do yourself a favor and save yourself a headache and tell her no. Take her to Japan for Disneyland if that is what she wants to do. Anyways, is she an Issan girl or international school girl? Mine went to international school and homegirl's family got money so she got her visa. But I still told her no, I am not playing defense the whole time there. Save yourself a headache, take her to Japan.

yeah! We’re getting the law back by having masked men abduct people off the street and shredding the 4th amendment! If we just break the law a little more, it’ll come full circle and we’ll get TWICE as much law! /s

almost 500 American citizens (that we know of) were illegally abducted and taken at least, to detention facilities. An unknown number were shipped to facilities multiple states away if not in another country.

Another unknown number of people here on visas were abducted and held in detention centers having legally immigrated here.

Maybe you’ve forgotten the Hyundai factory raid only a few short months ago. Every single one of those people was here legally, at the invitation of our government to set up a factory to give us, their ally, high end manufacturing jobs. They were held for a week. Huge diplomatic f-up. In any sane time line, heads would roll.

That this hasn’t set of alarm bells, in your mind, and you’re parroting conservative media, is astonishing.

just like the thousands and thousands of illegals that came in under the old administration, Biden invited them without any visas or work permits, nothing but their hands out wanting the US to take care of them. Now it takes a while to sort out who should be here and who needs to be deported, this takes time to investigate, if they let them go to investigate they disappear, if Biden had not let all of these illegals in it would be a lot easier to determine which ones are illegal and not using fake names etc

I really appreciate the part where you ignored all of the very factual, very real happenings to American citizens and people completely abiding by immigration law.

And then proceeded to just regurgitate more non-sense.

The border has never been secure, and these people have been coming here for decades.

“Biden invited them” 😂

I also appreciate your logic that law enforcement should be able to violate the law at their total discretion so they can sort people out. What could possibly go wrong, right? Why even have laws? Why have rights!?

The interview is mostly a formality. They already have the decision made before that based on everything that is submitted beforehand.

Traveling with an American is a huge red flag. They think she is just trying to get a visa to travel to the US and then get married and adjust status, rather than doing the 1-2 year fiance visa process.

What they are looking for is that the person has a LOT of reasons to return to Thailand. Owns property, has a long-term job, has children or takes care of family, has plenty of money in the bank and substantial assets. Previous travel to other countries helps as well, showing that they leave Thailand and return.

great answer. The only thing I would add is that prior travel to another developed country such as Korea or Japan is extremely helpful. Travel to developing countries such as cambodia or Myanmar is not very helpful.

I have found even children and family don't matter. Thais are known to leave their children with family to work and support the family. Travel, property, and money seem to be the focus. Having a boyfriend is a red flag.

Thanks. All this info might prove helpful. So if she has been out of Thailand a couple of times and has a house in Thailand what is a ballpark amount to have in her bank account that might help her get approved for a US Visa?

They don't want someone who can't support themselves coming to the US. How are they paying for the trip? How are they going back to Thailand?

If someone doesn't have much money and is going to the US, it's expected they are trying to go there to work.
