Hey everyone,

I’m flying to Thailand tomorrow from Australia. I’ve already completed my entry form etc. My question is can I enter with my 60 day tourist visa on arrival if I haven’t booked a return ticket? I’m planning on doing further travelling, I just haven’t decided where I’ll be going next.

Thank you

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the validity of entering Thailand with a 60-day tourist visa on arrival when holding a one-way ticket. Many commenters share their experiences, indicating that while immigration typically doesn't ask for a return ticket, airlines often do check for proof of onward travel. Several suggest booking a cheap or refundable ticket to avoid any issues at check-in, and others recommend being prepared to discuss travel plans if asked. The consensus suggests that while entering without a return ticket is possible, it carries some risk depending on the airline's policies.

I arrived mid December on a one way ticket, they did ask me for my outward ticket and took a picture of it.

I came in again last month, they didn't ask me for an onward ticket, only asked when I was leaving, and to where ...

Also, they didn't ask for the e-arrivial card

60 days is standard entry no visa required must have return ticket. New rules to stop overstayers

You could be denied boarding of aircraft

The entry requirement to enter Thailand are quite clear. Do you not think they apply to you ?

never had a problem with one way entry - don’t worry

Some airline from Australia wont let you board without a return ticket, my son was a checkout and had t

2 tickets on different airlines and when she saw only one she would not let him check in, he then stated he would be flying with another airline and showed the itinerary, she then let him check in

They've never questioned me on my return. I bought insurance on my ticket just to be safe. In case I changed my travel plan

No, you're not eligible for visa on arrival, you are eligible for visa exemption, as in being stamped in for 60 days without any visa
Simon *******
It is not a 60 day tourist visa, it's a 60 day visa exemptions stamp

I was asked last time I entered a couple months ago flying into Phuket. This was at immigration, not the airline. I didn’t and was pulled out of line to show proof of funds and sign a waiver promising to leave. They were nice about it as far as immigration goes for whatever that’s worth. I’ve also heard more instances that they're becoming more strict with that. If you don’t, I’d recommend you have plenty of cash on you, ideally baht.

In immigration I was asked date I fly back home

Once upon a time you’d sometimes get asked for an outbound ticket on check in in Oz.

I travel outside Australia usually on one way tickets every month. I haven’t been asked since 2014. But it’s possible.

If anyone made it an issue, I’d just log on at airport and buy the cheapest BKK to Saigon or Phnom Penh Air Asia ticket for $50 and call that a fee ;)

It's the airlines that require the return tickets not immigration, sometimes they ask, sometimes they don't
Andrew *******
@Lee-Ann ******
true ...it's an airline requirement immigration seldom if ever ask for proof ..often arbitrary..often depends on the airline / check in clerk

@Lee-Ann ******
Rarely. Very rarely.

delta always asks!

fair enough. I think the question referred to out of Australia though where the question is much less rare. I don’t think Delta fly out of Oz to Thailand

Yes

Although never asked for, I book a flight to Cambodia to show onward travel it's cheap

I arrived on a one way ticket a couple of months ago and it wasn't a problem.

my uncle lived to 110 and smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day and a fifth of whiskey. Doesn’t mean everyone will have the same experience.

@Jack *******
that's correct but this was still my experience and all I can do is speak from experience

your comment wasn’t helpful at all.

You don’t have info from many sources, so it’s just an opinion. He’s right to point that out so that the author doesn’t take your serious

Book a cheap ticket out to be safe

Unlikely to be asked by immigration but a good chance the airline will want to see a ticket out of Thailand. Really depends on the check in agent.
Andrew *******
@Jack *******
yes true ....depends on the check in agent ....sometimes I'm asked to show proof of onward journey ...sometimes not... even with same airline ..very annoying
Michael ********
Problem is likely to not be immigration but check in at airport. There are few websites that offer temporary flights
Andrew *******
@Michael *******
immigration have never asked me in over 30 years .....some airlines will ask for proof but it seems purely arbitrary.....it's actually very frustrating when you want a flexible itinerary....can also depend on the person checking you in ....

I fly in and out all the time for work have lived here since the early 90s. Pre covid was rarely asked by check in staff now i would say I get asked to show visa or ticket about 75 % of the time. Its actually AITA regulations to ask for showing onward flight. In all those hundreds maybe thousands of entries i have been asked to show onward flight by immigration a grand total of 1 times
