TLDR : Answer Summary
When planning a retirement trip to Thailand, it's important to be aware of the cash regulations. Travelers can carry up to $10,000 out of the U.S. and must declare amounts over this limit. In Thailand, you may bring up to $20,000 without issue, but it's advisable to declare larger amounts. Many respondents suggest using ATM and credit cards, and only carrying cash for immediate expenses upon arrival. For accommodations in the Jomtien area of Pattaya, recommendations include hotels like KTK and condos like Riviera and Riviera Ocean Drive, ideal for a comfortable and relaxing stay away from the party scene.

Just get 10,000 or so baht cash for when you first arrive.

Use you cards as you would In your home country.

Never a good idea to carry too much cash.

As for accommodation, stay at a hotel for a week or so and ask others about what would suit your needs. Check Agoda etc for info.

It really depends on your budget and length of time you will be in Thailand

For a non-o visa he’ll need 800k in a Thai bank in his name only and the funds must show a foreign transfer

in case of a "change of visa type" from a tourist visa to a 90-days Non-O retirement visa, he needs the proof the money came from abroad (the Thai customs declaration!). The same applies if he wants to buy a condo from that money

if he declares the funds when leaving the U.S., he can carry unlimited cash. If he declares funds higher than 15.000.- U.S. Dollars to Thai customs, he can bring unlimited cash into Thailand. Latest and most up-to-date Thai Customs Regulations:

this must have changed in the last month as I always bring $20,000 and flying in from Cambodia the captain made an announcement that 20 k was the limit bring all you want if you want to declare it ,if your buying a condo your need to show the slip showing where the money came from as you need to prove it when buying

the date when Thai Customs changed the rules can be seen in the lower right corner. Fact is, that many Thai border officers are not aware of the change. TIT! Even the Thai Embassy in Singapore posts the wrong figure - 15.000.- USD - on their webseite, unchanged. They are just incapable of coordinating updates

As much as you want as long as you tell them you have more than 10K with you, especially within the US. I stopped and told them, no problem and they escorted me to the next Terminal after I ponted out to them that the people loitering outsid all knew that I had more than 10K on me.

I stay in Wongamat area. It's about 2-5 km from beach road. Its quiet but near to all the other stuff.

The North end of Beach Road is pretty quiet with more upscale hotels. North of Soi 6.

If you don't need the scene look further South of Jomtien. Nice places and cheaper too, plenty of good restaurants and cozy bars. Easy ride to Pattaya for groceries etc.

KTK is a decent hotel with a great breakfast buffet. They have regular hotel rooms and also offer longer stay rooms with much more room and comfort.

You've researched I hope, are you looking for city, beach, mountains.

Hua Hin, Pattaya, Bangkok, Chiangmai, or Rural Isaan, all as different as night and day

Target your wants, needs, way of life. Then Base and explore. The exploration is the fun. BIG cultural differences between Provinces.

Keep an open mind and enjoy.

Was in same boat 20+ years ago...enjoyed the every year.

You can bring as much as you want. However if you bring $10,000 or more you must declare it as you're leaving America.
