TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can bring 500,000 baht cash into Thailand, but it is advisable to declare it at customs, especially if it exceeds 20,000 USD (approximately 660,000 baht), as this amount may require proof of source. Many users suggest transferring funds to a Thai bank account prior to entering Thailand to avoid the risks associated with carrying large amounts of cash.

and I believe we've explored the options the O/P has on this "barely visa related topic" ;)

Good Luck (y)

I seen money (a lot less than you have) been taken off a firang cos he couldn't prove where it come from. Like one post says get a thai bank and transfer to your thai bank. A lot safer.

So easy to open an account but if you have any difficulty then there are firms what can do this for you for around 2k baht

If it was less than US$ 20,000 they have no justification for taking it away. The Thai government website is quite clear on the amounts and the requirements.

Definitely worth doing that way. You’re right.

Is thus visa related? would you not be better off doing a bank transfer>

If the 500,000 is for a Thai Elite visa, they take credit/debit cards. You'd want to make sure you had a zero foreign fee card, but if you do that might make more sense.

Also worth bearing in mind depending on what exactly this is for is that some visa-related things in Thailand may need proof you brought the money IN to the country. For cash, this means the customs declaration at the airport. So this is another reason to declare it, even if you otherwise wouldn't have to.

Yes u may, any amount more then 500k baht. It is best u declare at the customs. Done it plenty of times.

Open Thai bank account, then wire the money from your home bank account. You’re asking for trouble carrying that much cash. Shit happens! I’ve seen it!

You can bring in more than 10,000 per person, but you have to declare it, and have evidence of where it came from .

The Thai government customs website says US$ 20,000.
Judy **********
I stand corrected. I thought it was each person. I’ll have a look in less then three weeks when we fly again to be sure.

The travelers bringing foreign currency more than USD 20,000 or its equivalent into or out of Thailand are required to make a report to Customs. This report is required by the Ministerial Regulation (No. 25) B.E. 2530 issued under the Authority of the Currency Exchange Control Act B.E. 2485 and relevant regulations.

@Len ****************
he did specify. He said ‘into the Thai airport’.
Len *****************
i think its under 20k US dollars, so no problem. the poster mentioned he has 500k Baht, but didn't specify if he is taking it out or in Thailand.. if taking out, the maximum is 50k baht except in certain borders/countries. so he need to declare it.
