I'm from the US and have only entered visa exempt previously. With a METV, what do I have to do differently upon entering and exiting?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand with a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV), you can stay for up to 60 days per entry, compared to the 30 days provided under visa exemption. Upon arrival, ensure you complete the TM6 immigration card correctly, including writing your visa number. If you plan to stay more than 30 days, the METV is beneficial as it allows multiple entries within its validity period. It is also noted that to avoid confusion between TM30 and TM6 cards, the correct card for arrivals should be confirmed. Overall, the process remains straightforward and similar, with the METV allowing for a longer stay.

Bring starburst. How long do you intend to stay? METV- Long time many times. VOA -- less than 30 days. If you plan to be here for less than 30 days - just show up at the airport immigration (though boarding a plane maybe difficult). If you plan to make a life for yourself here - get the METV, show up at the airport. But in all cases have starbursts.

By card do you mean arrival card?? Yes this is the TM30 registration of address form. They will only ask for it if making a report or extesnsion. Everyone says.....Oh the Landlord needs to do that.....but the Landlord is not making a visa extension are they.....better to do it ourselves I reckon....I move around a lot....so my Lanlord would not be able to keep up..!!

If you have not done it and you go for an extension they may fine you 1600 baht...or more...I think max is 5000. BKK no need.

In that case tell Landlord to register you with a TM30 form if you are worried, at the local immigration office. Can't do it at the airport as far as I know. Can download beforehand and fill it out. Should be the Landlord but many tenants end up doing it themselves.

I might apply for an extension after my last entry on this visa. So perhaps it's a good idea to do it then? If so can I fill out the tm30 at the airport?

They could check if they wanted to. You are supposed to report within 24 hours of each arrival. But they wouldn't pick it up unless you went for an extension at an office or had to do some reporting like with the long term visas. Just leave before expiry of the visa stamp and you would not need to visit an office. Unlikely they would come and do a spot check for a tourist visa. In that case you would never be fined. If in BKK Tod says they don't care.

Renting a condo. I assume they won't know when I come and go so I'll need to do it each time?

It is only needed if you have to make an extension at SOME immigration offices. Ie Pattaya and Chiang Mai require. BKK not required. The form can be downloaded (search TM 30) or go to an immigration office. Should be owner of property that does it (unless that is you) You have a METV so you won't need it will you? just leave and re enter...?

Hi Tanya. No only the completed arrival card handed out on the plane is needed. Jeremy mentioned a TM30 form above, but he meant the arrival card. TM30 is just to register your address for people staying in private residences (ie not hotel).

Nothing different. Visa exempt gives you 30 days when entering, METV gives you 60 days. You can enter as many times as you want before the ' enter before date' on your visa, each entry gives you 60 days in the country.
