What are my options for extending my stay in Thailand with a New Zealand passport?

Many thanks in advance for what must be repetitive questions. Just a bit confused about my options for a New Zealand passport. Can I get a 60 day VOA then extend for 30 days more? I currently have return flights booked for a 5 month period and I'm hoping to stay most of that time if possible, with a visa run. Should I book a cheap flight out to another country for within 60 days of first arrival, then cancel if I get an extension? Thanks again.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation addresses the visa options available for a New Zealand passport holder wishing to extend their stay in Thailand beyond the usual entry limits. Options discussed include entering Thailand on a Visa Exempt Entry, which provides a 30-day stay that can be extended for an additional 30 days at an immigration office. Additionally, obtaining a METV (Multiple Entry Tourist Visa) from their home country is recommended, which allows for up to 9 months of total stay with border runs. Important reminders such as checking with airlines for onward travel proof and understanding the difference between various visa types are emphasized.

Or get a tourist visa which gives you 60 days, plus get an in country extension 30 days, then do a border bounce giving you a 30 day visa exempt entry, which can be extended an additional 30 days. , There's your 5 months.

thanks! It seems I can’t do the online tourist visa and I’m nowhere near an embassy so VOA is my only option? And it’s 60 days for both anyway?

They are NOT 60 days for both 🙁

A Tourist visa that you buy before you come here gets you stamped in for 60 days and you can extend that once for 30 more days <- total 90 days

Whereas a Visa Exempt entry that you get for free when you stamp in without a visa is good for 30 days and you can extend that once for 30 more days <- total 60 days

follow the above comment and you get your 5 months without that much hassle at all 🙂

That you want to stay here 5 months doesn't mean your air carrier will let you board with onward travel booked out past the number of days you'll get stamped in for coming here without a visa (visa exempt/free entry stamp).

CHECK with your air carrier to see if they require proof of onward travel within the number of days you're stamped in for, if they say okay you're fine once you land here

okay first off lets get your errant terminology dialed in

NO as a kiwi there is no 60 day VOA, in fact there is no VOA at all for kiwis

you're talking about showing up here without any visa in your passport and getting in on a free stamp called a visa exempt entry <- which is for 30 days, and you can get ONE 30 day extension after you're here at the immigration office for 1900baht

You need to get the METV multiple entry tourist visa in your home country before you fly to Thailand.

With planning it will give you up to 9 months stay in Thailand. A couple simple border bounce by land border crossing or by air will max out your 9 months.

The Visa Exempt Entry will only get you 30 days stamp on arrival plus One 30 day extension of stay at Thai immigration office for 1900 Thai baht.

To stay longer requires you to LEAVE THAILAND and REENTER.

Keep it Simple.. do yourself a favor...

Get the METV multiple entry tourist visa in your home country.
