TLDR : Answer Summary
A New Zealand passport holder arriving in Bangkok is seeking advice on whether they can book a flight out of Thailand 60 days after their arrival, given they will initially receive a 30-day visa exemption. The discussion highlights several points, including the need for proof of onward travel within 30 days, options for visa extensions, and the possible use of refundable or changeable tickets. Participants suggest various approaches, such as booking a cheap onward ticket and obtaining a local extension while in Thailand, or applying for a longer visa before traveling.

You do not need to ask the airline; they will tell you that proof of onward travel is required within 30 days, regardless of whether they will actually check it. It's equally pointless asking a police officer whether driving 150 km/h is allowed. He will say no, regardless of whether you'll be fined if you actually do it. That's a matter of enforcement.

So. You just be prepared that you MIGHT get asked.

First NZ does not get VOA, but that is good since VOA is 15 days, and cost a fee.

Perhaps you mean visa excempt, or your trip may end et the departure airport.

Refundable flights is way more expensive, as you will see, when booking a ticket, on any airline website / app.

If you book a 60 day ticket, you may need a onward ticket out of Thailand within the first 30 days.

When going to Thailand for 31 - 60 ( 90 )days, the 60 days touristvisa is the best option.

It is cheaper than visa excempt + 30 days extension.

No need of a onward ticket ( 90 days 1 onward ), if returnticket within 60 days.

It is easier to apply from the comfort of your home.

Not wasting holiday time to find, go to and waiting at a immigration office ( 90 you would need that ).

Then no need to leave Thailand in up to 90 days.

Because of the fees at the embassy in NZ it’s as people mention best to just buy a cheap onward ticket within 30 days, throw it away and do a 30 days local extension regarding this.

Book your return flight 60 days later. I suggest 59 days to leave room for the unforseen. Once in Thailand, go to immigration before your 30 days visa exemption expire. You can do it even on arrival! Pay your 2K Baht and whalla... 30 days added to your stay, giving you 60 days.

not all immigration offices will let you get an extension shortly after you arrive. Some will tell you to come back on the last week. Check with Immigration first.

You cannot get an extension on arrival, just a 30 day entry stamp

you are correct. I am referring going to the immigration office. Not when you arrive at the airport.

Scoot airlines have changeable tickets for an additional $20 Singapore. Just fair difference applies. So when fly you can show them a ticket out in 30 days and then change it once you get to Thailand. I assume you plan to go back to another SE Asian country first before flying home? I was asked at the airports of my exit flights on some of trips around the area.

I'd Watch Scoot, I got caught on the third change, long story but watch them. I had a multi flexi fare
Shaughn ***********
@Alan *****
was there an actual limit that wasnt clearly advertised? I have a multi flexi fare that I'm going to have to keep active for perhaps a year.

@Shaughn **********
Mine was unlimited. First two cost was $2, third one was $1100 I then checked right through to Xmas extra $260, they even gave my Premium seat away and no economy seats av. so I had to choose It went to Australia without me on it.
Shaughn ***********
@Alan *****
ok understood. That’s the fare difference in play when changing to a flight that already has many of its seats booked.
Alan ******
@Shaughn **********
Hah, go into another Scoot site and don't use your special code, you'll see that even a non-frequent flyer with SAI gets a premium seat a hundred bucks cheaper. The $1100 seat was day 180 how convenient.

I found it easier to get in person once you're there. They don't ask for a return ticket on entry or at immigration. American airlines tickets are refundable but check your airline

You should have done it earlier but you're still good time to arrange a 60 days visa in New Zealand if you get going immediately. It's easier than all this other crap

@Thomas ********
to expensive to get a TR60 in New Zealand now

@Wayne ********
it doesn't cost much in Sydney

@Thomas ********
that's Australia try NZ website

@Thomas ********
No but it’s about 5x the price in NZ. Absolutely not worth it now. Come visa exempt and extend.

the bizarre mindlessness of Thai bureaucracy is mind-boggling

Ask your airline there the ones that will ask

I'm in Australia. About 10 years ago, I applied for a 60-day visa, at Thai consulate in Sydney. Easy process.

@Geoffrey *********
yes at the end of the day it's the easiest way to go because the way the Thais organized this is the usual mess because they haven't thought it through and leave it up to the customer to figure the rest out

Most embassies have detailed advice on their website, about how to apply, and der is a manual in the upper right corner at the website where you apply.

You cannot get Visa on arrival but you can get visa exempt.

You need to ask your airline about what their policy is for people traveling to Thailand without a visa. They are the ones who may cause problems by not letting you board your flight without proof of travel out of Thailand within 30 days. Each airline has their own policy on this.
