TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently on a 60-day tourist visa in Thailand, now extended through an amnesty program, but their medical treatment is extending beyond the visa expiry date of July 31st. They are seeking advice on applying for a medical extension after this date due to their ongoing treatment. Community responses indicate that extensions are indeed possible if backed by a doctor's note, although they highlight the necessity of applying before the amnesty expires. Some suggest using an agent for smoother processing, especially if one is an outpatient. The standard TM7 form is required for a medical extension, along with proof of treatment.

They're gonna have to build a new prison.

Can I get a medical visa for physiological issues. I mean for seeing a shrink. That is a job that will never end, and thus I could stay for years.

AFTER the 31st NO, you would need to get the documents from your hospital or doctor and go to the immigration office BEFORE amnesty expires to apply for a medical extension

Keep in mind medical extensions can be granted for no longer than 90 days. (most times they give you 30 or 60)

I think it is the regular TM7 form, although there may be an additional form on top. Then you need something filled out by the doctor certifying you cannot travel, and photos of you preferably showing why you cannot travel.

I also needed to sign power of attorney sending someone else in to immigration. If you go into immigration yourself they may take the view you can travel.

You can try, but I'm not sure you will get this for outpatient dental treatment. My understanding is that medical extensions are more for emergencies that mean you really CANNOT travel.

There is a medical visa (MT) for procedures, but that is something you get before you come to Thailand for treatment, rather than as an extension.

thank you Ivan, that helps a lot. I hadn’t thought about having someone go to immigration for me in this case, but makes sense and using an agent might require more than I’m willing to spend, but may be another play as well.

you're right it's just the TM7 application for extension

It's an extension, not a visa

do you know is there a form to fill out for the extension or do I just take supporting documents to immigration and handle with them directly.

Very helpful info Tod. You helped me before regarding similar medical extension for major dental procedure. I’ve arranged for dentist to provide and signoff on justification letter, but I’ve been on Thai immigration website and it’s not clear to me which visa application to use for the medical visa. Would I use the standard 90 tourist visa application supported by all my documentation?

I had an outpatient medical issue last year. I provided the info from my doctor. No issues with the extension. (Chiang mai).

I would consider using an agent for this. Particularly if you are not an inpatient in hospital. Medical extensions absolutely are possible, you can get them up to 90 days at a time if a doctor signs off that you cannot travel.

But conversely, many immigration offices are very slow to hand them out, some basically want you to be stuck in a hospital bed and will refuse them for stuff where you are an outpatient, if you can technically travel and continue your treatment at home.

An agent may be helpful with getting the desired outcome. The doctor needs to sign a form certifying this but I doubt most doctors are familiar with the details. If you are getting treatment in a hospital, you could check with them in the first instance, hospitals particularly the international private hospitals will deal with this and will be familiar with it.

I don't know in Bangkok, I'm in Chiang Mai. But outpatient at a clinic, not sure you will get easily.
