Should we get a tourist visa or extend our stay after arriving in Thailand for 60 days?

Hello! We are Americans wanting to spend 60 days in Thailand (Jan and Feb 2027). One month at an apt in Bangkok and then one month at an apt on an island (not chosen yet). We have been to Thailand many times, but it was 60 days then. Now with the new 30 days, should we just file for an extension once we are in Bangkok for the first 30 days or try to do a visa online before we leave? My concern with the latter is we dont know where exactly we are staying and may not until right before we get there. Has anyone done an extension since the rule change?

Thank you! I appreciate any assistance.
Answer summary
An American couple seeks guidance on staying in Thailand for 60 days (January and February 2027). They're unsure whether to apply for a 60-day tourist visa before travel or extend their stay once in Bangkok, given the recent visa regulation changes. Comments suggest that obtaining a tourist visa beforehand is typically easier and less time-consuming than applying for an extension in Thailand. Some recommendations include providing estimated accommodation details when applying for the visa.

I just applied for a multiple entry tourist visa through Chicago. Took 4 days - and one of those was a public holiday. Easy. My provided flight info was only for 15 days, but they still issued METV.

I’d get the tourist visa before arriving; save yourself time and energy.

Just apply for a tourist visa. Here is the official website

Get the visa, they may not allow you to enter the country with a depart date more than 30 days. Don’t take that chance I am doing the same kinda trip in February from US I am applying for visa 6 weeks be for my departure. The visa 60 day starts on arrival date

There is also a new problem with the 30 day extension, that is your carrier leaving from USA refuse you to leave because your original 30 day visa is not correspondending with your actual stay of 60 days ( they do not see that you are going to extend)I heard various stories of refusement or that you need to get a higher IO to explain this and still it is open you can leave or not. So play it safe and get right away the 60 day visa ( you need more documentation for that) A second option is to come in Thailand with the visa exempt method and to book a short cheap local flight out of Thailand where the carrier sees that you leave Thailand before the 30 day period The option for you is than when your in Thailand to take the flight and come back later when using a new exempt period, the second option is to not use that flight and go to the local immigration office to extend your VISA exemption for another 30 days (you only needed the outbound flight as a prove of your carrier)

- thank you. I think applying before hand sounds smart too. Its just all new to me since we havr never stayed there longer than 30 days before!

Just apply for the visa. It is not necessary that you know exactly where you stay during the time. Just put an estimate there. Once you entered Thailand with the visa and got your 60 day stamp, the visa expired and immigration got notified about your stay via TM30 reporting (usually).

Thailand was 30 days for years prior to the switch to 60 in July 2024. It is really not a “new 30 days” but rather a return to the original rules.

Tarvo Keskula original rules yes but then could do border bounces forever

Tarvo Keskula That is of course correct, but it doesn't help with the question at hand.

I pointed out the date it switched from 30 to 60 to question the comment that they have come “numerous times” with 60 days

Luit van der Linde - its because we have never stayed more than 30 days before. I am retiring this month so this would be our first winter longer than 30 days to finally stay there (we plan on 6o). Up til now, I just thought we would be following the previous 60 day no visa rule for our first 2 month winter stay so this is all mew territory for me.

Tarvo Keskula Exactly, I also don't understand how somebody "have been to Thailand many times", while visa exempt was only 60 days during 2 years.

For now 30 days visa exempt plus 30 days extension is more expensive than just 60 day evisa, and also the 60 day visa solves the "problem" of onward travel in 30 days.

In the section where it asks for accommodation in Thailand just put your original Hotel or wherever you plan to stay when you first arrive.

Enter the country and extend your visa for another 30 days.

It's much easier, and cheaper, just to get the 60 day tourist visa before you travel. Getting an extension can take the best part of a day, particularly in bangkok

Luit van der Linde everyone knows what is meant when someone writes '30 day visa'.

Ali Kolahdoozan Americans do not get a visa on arrival, nor can they buy a visa on arrival, they can enter without a visa for 30 days (visa exempt), and they can extend that STAY with another 30 days.

It is important to understand the correct terms.

Ali Kolahdoozan I have seen this suggested numerous times. However, it can lead you to be denied boarding heading there. My airport/airline verifies that you are departing Thailand within the 30 days given on arrival. Expecting to travel and then extend is risky.

Then it needs ticket and hotel voucher and everything aligned to the plan , but yes , much safer

- thank you. I think sounds like the best route. Its tough when you travel month to month to diffetent countries to plan so far ahead- but it sounds like I should on this one!
