Tried searching but could not find answers; as a US citizen visiting Thailand (with previous stops in Middle East) in order to apply for a 60 day Visa online…. Is it better to purchase my outbound flight for the 60 days I am requesting - or the 30 days and then change it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around whether a US citizen planning to obtain a 60-day tourist visa for Thailand should purchase an outbound flight for 60 days or a 30-day ticket that could be changed later. Key points include that if you're applying for a 60-day tourist visa, you should provide proof of an onward flight that reflects the full 60 days. However, if entering under visa exemption, a 30-day ticket is required. Additionally, extensions can be pursued once in Thailand.
What about if you are entering on 30 day visa exemption and then going to the immigration office to get a 30 day extension? Is that possible? Do I need to show an outward flight within 30 days even if I'm planning to extend it?? Thanks!
if you are entering 30 Day Visa Exempt (i.e. visa on arrival), you need to show proof of onward travel within 30 days. Even if you’re planning on extending it.

Judging from the question and the wording, are you applying for a 60 day visa and want to plan on a 30 day extension for 90 days?
the wording online is sometimes iffy - I have seen 60 days upon arrival. Sometimes 30.
I want to stay the 60’days, so I wasn’t sure if I had to pay ticket for the guaranteed 30 days that are approved.
Ultimately I am wondering, is it better to just arrive there and get 30 day visa and do the extension there? (Which I would need to flight at 30 days) or apply beforehand then with a 60 day flight out.
I will be coming from Dubai - but will only have been there for 10 days - before that Egypt. So I will have to do the sandbox route. (Egypt not one of the approved countries)
I will be in Dubai (approved country) after Egypt - but only 10 days - not 21 days. But I am also thinking of doing 30 days after Dubai in Sri Lanka - that should cover that situation.
And yes I am vaccinated.

If you're applying for a 60 day Tourist Visa from the embassy, then you don't need to worry about 30 days.
If you're coming without a Visa and using Visa exempt entry, then that is only 30 days and your onward travel should reflect as much.

"or the 30 days and then change it" - Why? What would be the point in doing that? You're applying for a 60 Day Visa, obviously get an onward flight that reflects that. For what reason would they want proof of onward travel at 30 days when they've already approved you to stay up to 60...
that’s what I would like to apply for. (Note: first time in Thailand which is why I am asking questions and done understand process - can’t say it’s super clear)
...if you are applying for a 60 Day Visa, get an outbound flight that falls within those 60 days. I'm sorry but I don't see what's so confusing about this. You are not trying to get a visa upon arrival, which yes, is for 30 days and thus has to show proof of onward travel within those 30 days. You are trying to get a 60 Day Visa. The 30 day stuff is irrelevant to you because you are not getting that kind of visa.
thanks … simple when you apply for visa you need to show onward ticket. Every country is diff from my experience. Just wanted to know what would be better to send for approval (an assumption of approval for 60 or what you know for sure is approved
