Can I insure and tax a vehicle in Thailand if it's registered in my spouse's name but I will be the primary driver?

Hi folk, we will be moving to our house in Chiang Mai in January. I will be applying for a spouse visa for myself.

My question is actually about vehicle insurance, as we will be purchasing a car shortly after arriving. To purchase the car, it will obviously be in the bossladys name, however, she doesn't drive.

Will I be able to tax, and insure the vehicle on a first class policy despite the vehicle being registered to her ?

Yes, you can do it all just the way you want. Just don’t get the cheap insurance. Get the most expensive insurance (cheap for you and I). My cool pickup truck is in my wife’s name. I’m not worried about that. Married 35 years.

Use the broker check DI for insurance quotes. They are very helpful. I am with Tokyo Marine and had great service.

Insurance is for the car in Thailand, not a specific driver.

Please tell me you didn't pay for the house and put it in her name for the ease of it.

Why is everyone here concerned about the car being in my wife's name.... Do you not trust your own partners ?

I guess some of us are more experienced and have lived here for quite a long time. Myself 28 years. The laws are different here than back home and we've seen this play out time and time and time again

I can assure you that 'this' is not playing out, and people assuming are certainly living out their own prejudices.

We've been married more than 25 years, the property in Chiang Mai, we've owned more than 20 years. We own plenty of properties here in the UK which we let out.

So perhaps we could hold up with the newbie horror stories, and stick with the original question.
