Today lawyer told me that’s huge problem with dtv visa and people are waiting 2 months, is it true? Anyone have experience with that?
Answer summary
The discussion centers around the difficulties faced by holders of the DTV visa, particularly concerning bank account access and delays in processing. Many commenters confirm that there are indeed challenges with DTV visas, including long wait times—potentially up to two months—and banks being reluctant to open accounts for DTV holders since it is categorized as a tourist visa. Various workarounds were shared, including using debit and credit cards that reimburse ATM fees, as well as alternatives like Wise and TrueMoney for transactions within Thailand.

i live here for 3.5 years and the solutions are fairly easy and good:

1. big cost positions like rent you pay via swift transfer. i do with Revolut. usually takes 5mins to transfer. costs me 0.45€ per transaction. plus the probable difference in currency exchange rate. perfect option.

2. utility bills, online shopping, Grab, AIS, etc. i pay with my credit card. for example via the respective apps. Lazada app, etc..

(this means i dont need as much cash for everyday use!)

3. i take 1x 30k baht from the atm for cash payment. cost 350 baht. not too bad compared to Wise transfer cost to a thai account ;)

4. optionaly i top up my truemoney account to use QR payments or transfer to friends, etc…

so, super easy to live without an account :)

The difficulty getting a bank account for legitimate people has reached absurd status. Is there a way to legally agitate for change?

Talk to the government. They made a law that says banks are responsible for all scam losses. Banks are no longer willing to take ANY chances when it's their money in the line.

Go to the Pink Bank - GSB (Government Savings Bank). It took three trips but eventually, I was able to open up an account,. With the help of my Thai speaking point person,. She spoke directly with the bank teller and we navigated the process. A lot more documentation was required. Also as a non Thai national, I am not eligible for online banking but there are no transaction fees at the ATM. Hope this helps.

Use debit cards that reimburse or have no ATM fees & have no foreign transaction fees: Charles Schwab, Fidelity CMA, and Betterment. You could also use TrueMoney wallet app for QR scan payments. To unlock the full features via kyc, which allows you to make small merchant payments, apply for a Thai drivers license. You can obtain one using your foreign drivers license accompanied by an international drivers permit from AAA.

bite the apple, withdraw the maximum of 30,000 THB at a yellow ATM (Krungsri Bank) but make sure your credit card provider's daily limit is covered. The 350 Baht ATM fee are secondary, because with a VISA or MASTER credit card, the exchange rate is actually VERY GOOD as long as your card provider does not charge hidden provisions. The exchange rate at a Thai ATM is only marginally lower than exchanging cash at Superrich. . . . . . . calm down, these small expenses are the price to pay for living in a country where everything costs much less than half the price you would pay in your home country

Karl Keyte 350 thb, how about using a virtual card and just pay for eveything using card and revolut account , revolut allows holding different currency accounts and you can transfer between accounts when exchange rates are favourable, also when you pay with card it comes from local currency account if you have local currency balance

Why am I the only person that never had a hard time being multiple bank accounts? Maybe because I'm not to cheap to pay a agent to do everything for me? They really are convenient, especially when you have the best! Our friendship goes both ways. I've done a lot for her and her family too.

Besides the advice already given, you can also bring cash in.

You can bring an unlimited declared amount. Or a limited amount (like
*****
€ in case of Eurozone) if not declared. Gives you the best rate anyway.

Even if you have a Thai bank account this is a very good option.
Bruno ********
Bruno ********
BC Farang how does this give you a better rate than conversion by Wise?
BC ********
BC ********
Bruno Juchli I don't know how they do it. I'm not a moneychanger or bank. But Wise makes profit, so it's not strange that some money exchangers give a lightly better price and make slightly less profit. I guess Wise can give a worse rate because for many people it is very inconvenient or impossible to rely completely on cash. So Wise has the luxury to exploit this and give a slightly worse rate than cash exchange, but better than other wire options of course. The cash money exchangers aren't really direct competition to Wise.
Paul *******
Paul *******
BC Farang But where you keep a large sum of cash safely? under the mattress?
BC ********
BC ********
Paul Jones somewhere in a drawer or wherever. If someone goes from hotel to hotel or guesthouse to guesthouse, it would be less convenient. But still a 100 K baht isn't that scary. For someone with a long term place, put the 400 k baht just in some drawer, hide it a little bit. If someone invites unknowns for heavy drinking, then it's risky. And I understand that for part of people it is a huge amount and feel uncomfortable about it. But there are also enough people for whom it is just the normal cash they have lying around somewhere. Everybody can decide for themselves.

Kim Nielsen the issue with TagThai is the ridiculous exchange rate, you are forced to accept a fictuous Kasikorn rate
Steve******
Steve******
Kim Nielsen TagThai can only be used when you top up with foreign currency at special Kasikorn FX Booths.

Moreta Pay is only working with business PromptPay accounts.
