Update: Went to KBank—no issues at all. New passport, they updated my details, took a photo, done. Account stays active. Thanks everyone for the comments.
Applied for a KBank account years ago on an ED visa. My debit card expired and I didn’t renew it because I didn’t want visa questions.
Now the app tells me to visit a branch for face registration and says to bring passport + passbook.
Anyone done this recently? Is it safe, or could they freeze/close the account if they see I’m now on a DTV visa?
I might not even need it? They only want face for higher limits and in case I swap my phone.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user successfully updated their KBank account details despite being on a DTV visa instead of their initial ED visa. Many commenters shared their experiences with updating bank account information in Thailand, affirming that it typically involves providing a passport and completing face verification. There are concerns about banks potentially freezing accounts if holders no longer have long-term visas; however, many concurred that compliance with bank requests generally resolves these issues without account closure.
I'm in the exact same situation, opened a bank account with the Ed Visa 3 years ago and I'm on a DTV now and they sent me the notification to go get my face scanned and replace my debit card and I was in and out in 15 minutes. Just go get your new card, you'll be fine.
I opened a bank account 6 years ago on working visa, left Thailand, came back 3 years after with a tourist visa (last year) and new passport, no questions asked, gave me a new card. I had kept the blue book.
Scanning my face was very funny because it took a long long time to have a perfect scanning. I guess the app of my bank was working to fast and I was not fast enough with my face scanning.
Just need to have sim registered with passport everyone's bank account has needed to be updated for over a year including locals just need to go in bank update everything good to go visa is not part of update
Opening a bank account in Thailand on tourism is not illegal at all. Previously, many tourists could open Thai bank accounts. But many Thai banks had new regulation about the tourists to open account. So they did not allow it anymore since years. The last bank standing to still open bank account for foreign tourists was bangkok bank. But from last year, bangkok bank did not do it anymore. And plus, new guidelines of the Thai central bank. So called, KYC, rules by international banking standard. So now, opening a bank account without valid visa in Thailand is almost not possible. However, rules are rules. The new rules can not effect on old one. New rules for new one. This is also basic law principle. Visa or stay permit only rules how long are you allowed to stay in Thailand. Not how long put your money in Thailand. There are some investors who already put their money in Thailand for investments reasons. Even they do not reside in Thailand anymore. They come and go sometimes to check his investments in Thailand. Do they have valid visa? or need it? I do not think so. At least in Thailand no. What about people who got visa or stay permit before, and lived in Thailand. But for any reason, they could not live in Thailand anymore or must go back home and stay there. And of course, their visa or permit would be expired. Mostly non o visa and extension. What about them? They do not have any valid visa now and their banks close or freeze their accounts and money in Thailand??? What about investors who put a lot of money into Thailand and no more visa? and not reside in Thailand?? Their money is frozen and gone??? If so, what foreigners want to invest money in Thailand?? Foreigners are Foreigners. We do not know when we go back home. We can go home but what about money left in the thai bank? or what if investment? frozen and gone?? If Thai banks do this, I personally never put a big money in Thailand at all. It is simply too high risk.
I had the same happen. I went in and they made me choose to update and show non o or close the account. Idk if it's every banks policy but it has been for 3 of my other banks. Good luck man.
My experience was they froze the account when they didn't have the documents to justify the accounts opening. they froze the account and then that was the motivation for me the account holder to come in and update the information to conform to current standards.
Go to the exact same branch you opened your account at. Not all bank branches are foreigner-friendly. One Kbank branch might be very helpful, while the other one might try to harass you and close your account.
There is no automatic mechanism by which your bank account is closed simply because you no longer hold a long-term stay that originally qualified you to open it. In practice, banks will most likely not concern themselves with your current immigration status when you attend to complete a mandatory update.
Stephen Howell No, no rules can go back to effect on old time. When you opened a bank account in Thailand, you had valid visa. So they opened it at that time. And you suddenly must go back home for any reason or must leave Thailand. And you are not in the situation to come back to Thailand and extend your permit. because you can not be in Thailand for any of reasons. So your permit is expired. Now you have no visa or permit. Then, Thai banks closed your account and froze your money? right? Normally, banks should not close your accounts for this reason. Visa and money is different issue. Banks are not immigration or authorities. They are just a company. They should not do this because your account is your privacy safe. So banks are the safe for you. And they can not touch your accounts like this. No visa does not mean you are criminals. But, if a foreign account holder has no valid visa and non resident, banks can take back profits for him like discounting or better rate etc.. But foreigners in Thailand have no benefit with banks. So no concern. For example, in other countries, when you got a visa and opened accounts and put money in there, and you no more reside or valid visa, however, your accounts are safe. But the banks special discounts for the foreign visa holders are hold or withdrawn. This is normal case. However, I do not know how is Thailand. If Thai banks do close and freeze foreigners accounts for no visa or permit something? I would never put good money in Thai banks.
Young I'm just saying what is happening not what should and shouldn't be. Banks have the discretion to close accounts if they feel there is suspicious activity. The fraudulent 800k in and out within 24 hours raises red flags and many of these accounts have been frozen
Stephen Howell That is not correct. You must always bring your passport when making updates at your bank. This is a standard facial verification update, which I have completed myself. Immigration status was not an issue, and I live in Norway with accounts in two Thai banks that were opened on a visa exemption twelve years ago.
you could comply with their request and just do the face scan and update the passport number. They might not want to see which visa you are on at the moment
