I have a multiple O based on marriage which is not due to expire until September. With Visa runs, my passport is likely to run out of pages before then. I am returning to the UK for a holiday in June and my plan is to get a new passport while I am there. On returning, is the visa in my old passport still valid, or do I need to get a new one?

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you have a multiple O visa based on marriage and plan to get a new passport while in the UK, your visa will still be valid, but it is crucial to keep your old passport with you. Upon returning to Thailand, you will need to have the visa transferred to your new passport. It's advisable to check with the authorities in the UK to ensure they do not keep your old passport during the renewal process, as you'll need it for immigration in Thailand. Additionally, consider applying for the new passport before your trip, and ask for a letter confirming the change in passport numbers if you can.

Perhaps easier to apply for a new passport before you go on holiday. I believe the UK, like my home country The Netherlands, uses VFS. They do a good job and it is probably not more expensive or difficult than doing it back home.

And perhaps check if you can get a passport with extra pages, I believe it is called bussiness passport.

I had to renew a US passport mid Thai visa also. Upon arrival presented both passports. Had no issues with immigration.

If you apply for a new passport in Thailand they automatically give you a letter saying you have changed from old passport number

to new passport number

because they know immigration want that letter. Renewing in the UK they may not issue that letter as standard so you may want to ask them.

Your visa will still be valid but you must keep your old passport with you, do not let the UK home office keep your old passport. You'll need to have the visa transferred into your new passport when you arrive back in Thailand.

Make sure the home office doesn't keep your passport. I know in the US if you get a new passport in state you need to send the department of state your old passport in the mail.

This is good advice. Just to add, when I replaced my passport a little over a year ago, they just punched a hole through it and sent it back with my new passport.

in UK they cut the corner off and return old passport to you

Bring both back and get immigration to move it over.

Make sure you fit a re-entry in before you leave.
