TLDR : Answer Summary
The general consensus among expats is that living in Thailand can be affordable, especially when one avoids touristy areas. While some regions, particularly pockets of Bangkok and Phuket, may have costs comparable to the US or UK, living outside these metropolitan areas offers significantly lower expenses. The cost of living largely depends on lifestyle choices, such as dining preferences and accommodation types. Amid discussions about comparisons with countries like Vietnam and Malaysia, many affirm that Thailand remains a good value, especially when opting for a more local lifestyle.

Bangkok is very inexpensive. It continues to be a bargain retirement destination.
Trav **********
Cheap, cheap, cheap!!!!!!!
Dave **********
Thailand is still a great value

If you shop in supermarkets a lot of imported goods are more expensive. If you eat at restaurants in tourist areas they can be more expensive than those where tourists rarely tread. Same with street food.
Frank **********
Big metropolitan areas are always more expensive. Move out away from mainly expat areas and it is cheaper. If you like to eat western style food it will cost more.

Compared to Viet Nam is 2x, but compared to Malaysia is half price.

It's all about how you want to live your life and where, if away from tourist areas it's still very affordable.

Been living in LOS >20 yrs on $1.2k-2k per month, with non working wife and 2 kids in private Thai schools, yet live better than my local neighbors. Used to have a car, now have 3 scooters. KISS method: no luxury condos/houses, stay away from beach resorts and expat restaurants. Live a normal life, and you still live better than the family next door. The trick is to live a *normal* life. You will never find yourself on the wrong side of the balcony. Cheers.

Cost of living in some pockets of Bangkok and Phuket are about the same as being in the US or the UK, but outside of those pockets, it's pretty reasonable, depending on how you want to live.
Gardar ***************************
All depends where you stay, tourist traps is more expensive then other places where less tourists.
Ian ********
Not at all.
Gary **********
It is not exspensive ..but exchange rate is not good ...
Dave **********
The exchange rate has steadily dropped the last year but if you look at a five-year picture it's been worse and better. Those of us that have been here for 10 years learned to move money when it's a good rate and wait to move money when it's a bad rate.
