I've used the search function for Taipei and I can see that seasoning requirements are not as strict as other places.

Has anyone succeeded recently and what was your experience like?

I plan to apply in September
Answer summary
The discussion revolves around the cost of living for expats in Thailand, specifically focusing on housing, food prices, and general expenses. Participants share varying personal experiences, emphasizing that while Thailand can be affordable for foreigners, it remains challenging for local Thais due to lower wages. Many mention extraordinary savings compared to their home countries, highlighting cheaper local food options and rental prices in non-touristic areas. However, there are disagreements about whether living in tourist-heavy areas leads to inflated costs. Overall, sentiments suggest a mix of affordability and expense, depending on lifestyle choices.

Dave Williams it is all relevant. I live in Ubon, but recently spent 3 weeks in Ho Chi Minh City researching the cost of living there

On average Vietnam is 30% to 40% cheaper than in Ubon Ratchathani. I looked at apartment rental costs, hotel costs, eating out costs, and grocery costs.

My wife is Thai and would not consider moving to Vietnam, but it was a useful analysis to make.

The Vietnamese economy is also growing 2-3 times faster than Thailand's, which has basically stalled in the last few years.

Chris Smeader yes the portions are many times small compared to the west but that’s prob why there’s so much obesity in the west. I eat considerably less in Thailand than I do in the US and have yet to feel starved or unsatisfied…although sometimes I simply get a 2nd $1.50-2 dish. 😃 There’s simply no way you can eat in the US for what you can in Thailand.

David Lew the price part is true, but there just is no protein or saturated fats in Thai food. That is why Thai men are five feet tall with no muscle mass. Also why the average IQ is 25% lower.

that's me pointing out that prices aren't sky high out of sight for crying out loud. We eat foreign food at nice restaurants at least two or three times a week We know what the prices are. And we avoid tourist areas like downtown Bangkok and Phuket they're not for us. My post is refuting that Thailand is not cheap anymore. It had nothing to do with getting drunk at Irish bars 555. We've been here 10 years now live the same kind of lifestyle we did back West. Travelled extensively throughout Thailand from north to south from the East to the Central. And a half a dozen other Southeast Asian countries. Living off of our social pension Plus savings capital gains. It's been so cheap that the Investments have increased by 50% over those 10 years. Thailand is very affordable and delightful

I guess people who seek cheap, are often simply bad in math and/or also completely misinformed about the price niveau.

For example, you are asking: "I am looking for a 2 room + kitchen Condo around BTS (insert what ever), budget 12,000 - 18,000."

What is the most common answer? Something like: "Oh cheap Charly, stay home!". The next common answer is: "below (insert price) you do not get anything in that area." Then followed by people who are proud that they got a cheap condo for 10x (yes no joke, I made the 12k to 18k example, because they pay 150k and consider that cheap, as it is bigger than their rabbit hole in New York City, and cheaper)

Why do they live so expensive? Oh because they have a foreigner as landlord and lies to them heaven and hell what a typical price is.

In other words: regardles what a foreigners considers cheap here in Thailand: it is only cheap in relation to his home country. It is still absurd expensive considering Thai markets.

If you do not bother to check what actually normal prices are, by going to a local shop where locals go, then obviously think half the price as at home is already cheap.

If you want to know how expensive a typical Thai lunch is, then go in rush hour lunch time to a place that is full with business women, bankers and business men. And then guess what: no one of them would ever ea a lunch for more than $3.

If you consider that "Cheap Charly", sorry: I do not go to Thailand to eat T-Bone steaks, badly made, for half the price than in Europe ... when I can get a better steak - just not imported from USA - for
***
th of the price in a Thai run steak house.

Bottome line, what I want to say is this: people come here to live cheap. That works until they start to add up cheap things, like 3 kids in a "cheap private school", is suddenly not so cheap. Living not to close to the school, because the "significantly cheaper than London. Paris, or NYC apartment" was so inviting, adds to school money. And now they need a private driver, to bring the kids to school. Because 16 year olds can not be trusted to use the BTS/MRT - in a dangerous foreign land. That adds again. Then the car of the driver is "smelly", so you buy your own car and hire a driver nearly full day / full time

Do not forget that the littlest child is only 8 and needs a nanny, otherwise the housewife can not do their hairdresser visits - which are so cheap, that once a week is okay, or not? And the housewife knows nothing about anything, she rather runs a expat ladies club (yes I exaggerate :P) and now you need a cleaning woman and a house keeper, and all three, preferable speak perfect English (insert desired accent - British is of topics, they are to posh).

90% of the price foreigners pay is their foreign life style. They prefer to mingle amoung each other. Go to places where the others go ... find it cheap because in "insert home country" it would be more expensive.

On the other hand, you can live a perfect live with a normal singel job as two people with 3 kids, if you just actually rent a 40k HOUSE in a quiet housing zone, with a 300sqm garden around it, and a "normal private school" with an English program, where the tuitiion fee is 20k per semester, and the next 3 or 4 MRT/BTS stations are perhaps 2km away.

What I never get: why do people, who pay more than 100THB for a perfect made, perfect healthy wonderful tasty Thai food, and call people who point out, that this unusually is expensive and retaliate with: "Cheap Charly"!

Oh, I should have added internet and what ever :P Here are people who suggest "tourist SIM cards" beause they are so much cheaper than internet/mobile phone at home ... that actually makes me roffeling, when you can get a more or less flat rate in every

Obviously there is inflation everywhere not only Thailand. Yes, price has gone up but it’s still cheap to me. Yeah, cheap depends on what people think cheap is. 3,000b dinner for two can be cheap to some and expensive to some. Also 800b dinner can be expensive to some too. All different income and different representation of cheap. For the most part if a persons income is coming from western countries I’d say it’s cheap for them.

I don’t see much change in sticker prices; it’s exchange rates that hurt people. If you come to Thailand for the long term, you can choose a very affordable lifestyle and yet still feeling thankful for everything you have. It’s easy to live well IMO.

I believe the price increase in Thailand is relative to the times, I used to get a noodle dish for 35 baht back in 2003 when the exchange rate was 45thb to the dollar, then it went up to 37 baht in 2010, and now in 2026 it is 45 to 50 baht. In the States, the same dish used to be 7 dollars bac in 2003, then it went up to 11 dollars now it is about 15 dollars.

I came here 12 months back on DTV as digital nomad with my wife who is Thai and three cats. I bought my job with me and earn now exactly what I earned living in Sydney. We bought a house and car and in reality our lives have not changed that much, albeit we eat out a lot more often. I am saving a bucket load, I cannot believe how much money I have saved in 12 months. On day to day life I am literally spending a 5th of what I was living in Sydney. Thailand may not be as cheap as it was back in the day, whenever that was, but it is still cheaper than Australia. Sure Cars are not cheap, luxury goods are not cheap, anything imported including Farang groceries are not cheap but day to day living if your not a tourist if it is not cheaper then your doing something wrong.

Add on the visa fees, donations, extended family, falang price tax, hospital visits, medication (free in the UK if prescribed by a Doctor) frozen pension in my case

offset all of the above for a quieter life, being able to go on a trip or have a barbeque almost any day of the year :)
Mick *****
Mick *****
Marty LewisBit different for me: DTV Visa $87 AUD per year, donations I leave that to the wife, extended family - my wife is fiercely independent has her own income and money as do her family. Her brother is an electrical engineer & little sister property developer, no one owns a buffalo , no one needs my support & I never get asked to pay for anything. Falang pricing is really a tourist thing and last time I went to a National Park I flashed my pink ID and paid local price anyway. I pay the same price for food, petrol, electricity a car as any Thai does. - Free medicine gee the UK sounds good. In Australia I did not have to pay for medicine, but I had to pay the medicare levy ( that's the tax in Australia that pays for the free medical) and the medicare levy surcharge ( An additional tax for medicare for high income earners > 100,000) In Australia for my free bottle of pills I paid $10,500 per year and if I go to hospital I may still have to pay gap payments. I have top cover here with AIA , If I go to hospital everything is covered and it costs me $4000 per year. Can't really comment on the pension as I will not qualify for an AU Pension as a self funded retiree.

It is more expensive than it used to be. FX rate was 85 baht - £1 was very cheap to live here.

Nothing ever stays the same and it depends where you stay and go. Pattaya can be expensive but also reasonable depending where you go. 40-60 baht beers on happy hour or 100b a pint. Food can be cheaper but portion size is also reduced. I buy food from Makro or market and cook at home, saves money but also i know what goes in and what im eating.

I shop and spend in baht not $ 🤷🏼‍♂️

baht per month in Hau Hin for example. Yes food is cheap if you go for the cheap options. 60 baht meals in home run cafes and in shopping mall eating areas use cheaper cuts of meat and cheaper vegetables with a lot of added sugar, tapioca, starch and cornstarch.

Of course if you source and cook your own food you will get better healthier products.

So yes Thailand is cheaper than the UK Australia Germany etc providing you live away from Pattaya Patong in Phuket and Bangkok.

Martin Martin You would get that likely for ~10k in Hua Hin. Of course if you want the best you can get for ~30k - then you have some room to scale up. But people usually settle for a 10k condo, but pay 30k, and keep insisting that this is cheap :P

Greg Alexander Yeah, and I'm not really bothered over a 20 baht difference. A lot of dishes that are, say, 80 here, were 60 when I lived in Ranong (and cost of everything has gone up since then as well). It's certainly not the "4x or 5x more expensive" figure that folks seem to like to say (that said, if you want a luxury villa, you're gonna pay luxury prices, and if you try to book a hotel room during peak season, well, yeah, naturally... But those prices go up on all the other islands just the same)

Good way to look at it, regarding the quality pork pieces. Like, I'm a big guy, and this was a completely satisfying meal. Can't complain one bit. At the end of the day, I think too many people get stuck on the lowest price as if that's the one singular concern, and when people promote Thailand as such, it misses out on so much

Sorry for the ramble 555

Why do most foreigners always put Thai baht into dollars

120 baht for haircut is around 3 hours of work for a Thai .

Convert 3 hours of dollars then you get the price ,

Ninimum wage Britain £12 per hour so that haircut is £36 …expensive

Lunch 50 baht …around 1 hour work for a Thai

Minimum wage Britain £12 so that 50 baht meal is £12 .expensive

And so on and so on ..

He mentions 280 USD for a room ?.. that’s around half of a middle class Thai person wage and that’s only a room ?

Thailand is considerably more expensive for both locals and foreigners and what ever comparison to the American dollar won’t change that
MagentaZ********
MagentaZ********
Jamie Watt I like how you put cost in this perspective. Honestly, I think it’s cheaper for locals to live independently in Thailand vs USA especially California. Minimum wage in Cali is $16.90 about $2,700 a month. Minimum wage in Thailand is about 10,000b a month. Studio in California is around $1800-2000 a month that is 74% of a minimum wage income in Cali. Studio in Thailand is about 3,000b-4,000b that’s about 40% of a Thai wage. Keep in mind I’m comparing to a studio not in tourist area for both countries. Not a shit hole and not a luxury studio.

I’m just staying Thai spend less on living cost vs Californians percentage of their income wise.

Laura Todd you need to get out more. I'm in a tourist area in Phuket and I only eat Thai food and never spend more than 70 baht on a meal, most meals are 50 or 60 baht. As for housing outside of Phuket and Bangkok it's very cheap 5000 baht for a 2-3 bedroom 2 bath house. I'm currently in a 3 bed 2 bath house, 4 aircons, western kitchen, big garden and garage, 10,000 baht/month.

Laura Todd don't know where you're getting your ideas about housing not being cheap. In 10 years we have purchased two single family homes and five condoms all of the properties were about one-third of the cost of back home. Cars are expensive because of the VAT. But when you consider the property tax and car insurance the Total Package is much more affordable than back home. What's the first class car insurance being about 650 THB per month that's a fraction of what it cost back home. Yes Our brand new Honda Hrv Was One million And back home The same car sold 750 000 But when you consider Total cost of Property taxes and Car insurance. Driving a car here is more affordable. Especially the cost of Operating a motorcycle.

You are trying to put Thai “normal” residents into western style housing and basic living. Sure western housing is expensive forvThais because they don’t have the western education, jobs or wages. The ones that do, believe me they live a very good living condition. Much better than their western counterpart in the western world.

Simon James here we go another asshole that can’t just make a comment nicely. Your wrong. It may be for you but not the working Thai people. Happy it’s cheap for you, not for the people whom make $500 a month working Thai people whom I’m sure serve and have to accommodate your pompass .

Laura ******

Mike Maday not compared to the wages they pay here for actual Thai residents living here working. Maybe for you but not for the working Thai community.

I think people refer to how cheap it used to be accommodation in hotels has definitely gone up and I just had my hair done here in Chiang Mai and it cost me 2500 baht which is over $100 aud a Mai tai was 300 baht $13 aud but anyway we all choose how to spend our dollar don’t let it fustrate you what people say

Alison Cherry Standen Well, you are female. Why women spend so much for hair, no male ever will understand. Except he is a hairdresser himself :D

However if I walk a random sideroad with simple shops, I easy spot hairdress shops for "everyone" that start around 1000 THB (3 days minimum wage of a Thai).

Regarding the cocktail, no idea. I simply do not frequent shops that are made for tourists and charge "big money".

Mostly, because the few times I *had to* visit such a place, it was absolutely awful.

Alison Cherry Standen the resorts that my wife and I frequent when we travel to visit family have been the same price for 10 years now. These resorts are very nice And their price has been the exact same thing per night for 10 years. Both resorts renovate every three years so their rooms are fresh and clean. In Nan oi

700 bhat per night with breakfast 😋 and Nakon Sawan 450 bhat no breakfast.

Alison Cherry Standen there's a lot more to Thailand than Bangkok and Phuket. So instead of folks whining that Thailand is not cheap anymore maybe they should say central Bangkok and Phuket aren't cheap anymore. Because the rest of the country is a bargain
