I have DTV and was recently offered a local job with short term contract. Is it worth to give up DTV for Non-B?
Answer summary
A user inquired whether it is advisable to relinquish their Digital Tourist Visa (DTV) for a Non-B visa due to a short-term local job opportunity. The conversation highlights concerns regarding visa denial risks, especially since the user previously mentioned earning money online during a visa-exempt entry, which is against immigration rules. Participants emphasized the need to comply with visa regulations and advised seeking proper documentation and possibly employing immigration services for better chances of approval. They also discussed the discretionary nature of immigration officers in determining entry even with a valid visa.

Does the 20k needs to be cash or in a bank account?

If it helps, a friend of mine was denied entry earlier this year due to too many visa exemption stamps but got a DTV visa a month or so later and had no trouble coming into the country with it.

AFAIK the immigration experience and requirements are exactly same as tourist visa entry. It has a longer validity but it is still a usual no-emplyment non-immigrant visa. Keep 20k baht, hotel bookings/apartment, means to go back within 6 months, a reason why you need to be in the country for that long. This isn't a temporary residence.

That's the thing with Thailand, you never know. Even if you've followed all rules it is up to an individual immigration officer and what mood he is in today.

You are very forgiving. There's plenty of places will snatch your hand off in Asia. If Thailand doesn't want you, go to Vietnam; just as lovely and half as cheap.

I know someone who was approved with a DTV, yet he got rejected from entering Thailand. What I learned is that an approved DTV doesn't mean anything unless you come face to face with an immigration officer.

PS: He was working online in Thailand for 6 months until they found out, how they found out, only God knows.

It's important to comply with all visa requirements to avoid unnecessary complications. You must complete a 90-day report, and late reporting may result in a ฿2,000 fine and require you to report in person at immigration. When completed on time, the report can usually be submitted online.

You are also required to leave the country every six months and maintain the required minimum balance in your bank account.

Depends on why you’re refusing entry last time. The officer still have the right to refuse your entry even you have valid visa.

There has been reported cases where holders of a DTV Visa have still been interrogated by immigration. Its like playing roukette

Having a visa approved is not a guarantee that the immigration officer on the day won’t deny you for their own reasons.

I had that happen. I had to leave with a black mark (one year visa was mistakenly issued as not multiple entry, leading to a technical overstay). I explained and appealed the case with my local embassy, who then granted me a replacement visa. But that new embassy visa was not honoured when I returned and I was rejected on arrival.

It really doesn't matter at the end of the day the IO will do what ever they because they are not held to higher standard of their own laws like countries of Japan or Korea where they don't work by the mood of the day or take bribes using agency. You want a guarantee use an agency for safe entry or be prepared for the IO on her rag and denies you

If they didn't like something about your entry the last time, they may dislike the same thing when you apply, and you'll need to say that you were previously denied entry.

It would help to know why you were denied. Was it too many visa waiver entries and border bounces?

Read the question. it starts with if. Depending on circumstances, they may, in rare case refuse to grant the Visa. Once granted, he will be ok entry. All immigration files are link to the same central computer now which has an automatic abuse pattern recognition. That is why so many abuser get caught out.

Nobody can know for sure. It depends on your thai immigration history, why you got denied last time and the mood of the immigration officer on entry.

A DTV (and good documentation), dressed/groomed well and perhaps immigration fast track would certainly improve your odds significantly
Paul ********

Am not being naive (I assure you) but WHY are people being denied when they clearly MUST know the updated requirements and the fact that immigration are somewhat hot at the moment......if you've more than few Visa exempt entries get that SETV or METV .....People are applying for this DTV knowing full well they dont meet the requirements applying for soft option cookery classes etc which people know are bullshit.....if you're getting booted despite having a SETV then something is flashing up against that IO screen as you arrive

Paul Thomas people are idiots. Theyre either too lazy to read the requirements or they think they are special and can apply the requirements as THEY see fit. I see constant whinning about the cash requirement that's been in place for decades but only recently enforced and people thinking the black and white requirements don't mean "them" or it's too expensive. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 if 20k baht is too much to carry in cash they need to stay home in mommies basement.

there's not a huge difference between a visa exempt entry and a standard tourist visa entry, both are designed for short term tourism and not for living in Thailand

There is a pretty big difference when it comes to being denied entry. Denial of entry while holding a valid visa is extremely rare compared to visa exempt.

@John *********
Incorrect and I made this point elsewhere the other day.....when you apply for a SETV you have to provide bank statements proof of flights hotels etc in advance.....you are vetted as obviously they can see from Passport what previous entries you've had and when......now if that Immigration website (because thats what it is) approves your application and issues a SETV what effectively happens is that an IO at port of entry is now saying my colleagues are idiots and he/she losing huge face now a complete no no in Thai society...now I agree that IO have final say but in 36 years I have never heard of anyone with a SETV approved in advance being rejected.....there will be a reason like turning up like a tramp you see it every day in those immigration lines and the IO taking an immediate dislike to the traveller
Christopher **********
Christopher **********
Paul Thomas, being denied at entry does not mean that they are saying that their colleagues are idiots (necessarily). They can also be altering the decision based on the in person presentation that the embassy did not have. If the SETV holder tells the IO that they are planning to do volunteer work, which is work, during their visit (or any other violation of their visa), the decision to deny entry is based on the person stating they won’t abide by the terms of their visa rather than the judgement and sanity of their colleagues.
Deepak *******
Deepak *******
Paul Thomas a visa is not a guarantee of entry. IOs have absolute authority to deny you entry. Do you know how many entries are denied by the US to visa holders? They don't say that colleagues in the embassies are idiots to give the person a visa.

At this point you have nothing to lose but the application fee. I say apply, but make sure all your paper work is 100% in order. If it is really worth it to you, hire an immigration lawyer like Siam Legal. They will not take your are case if you are unqualified for the visa. I would start there.

I overstayed by one day and nearly got sent home. If you overstay and they believe it was intentional then you are not wanted here and have no chance. I can’t even leave until I sort my visa. The customs are viscous.
